They may have given up their WMD programs to keep up appearances on the outside, but Libya is still medieval all the way on the inside—in a wholesome, Islamic sort of way.

LONDON - Libya is arbitrarily detaining women and girls indefinitely in “de facto prisons” masquerading as “social rehabilitation” facilities, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

The US-based global human rights group’s report on the so-called protective homes for women and girls, deemed by the authorities to be “vulnerable to engaging in moral misconduct”, documents numerous alleged human rights abuses. ... It said some were there because they had been raped and then ostracised from their families for staining their “honour”. ... The inmates were not allowed to leave the compound and are sometimes subjected to long periods of solitary confinement for trivial reasons, HRW said. Most endure invasive virginity examinations, are given no education except weekly religious instruction and typically have no legal representation, the group said. The report added that the exit requirements were “arbitrary and coercive”, with a male relative taking custody, or marriage, often to a stranger, the only way out.

Meanwhile, most of the world appears to find Israel and the United States to be the most prominent impediment to world peace and universal rights.
