Egypt’s President Mubrak announced today that more than 3,000 Palestinian haj pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia will not be permitted to enter Gaza through the Rafah border. Instead they have put into 11 temporary camps 15 miles south in the Northern Sinai town of el-Arish. The Israelis fear that the hajis may bring in cash and weapons through the porous Rafah border with Egypt in the northern Sinai. The Israelis instead want these Palestinian Haj pilgrims to pass through the Israeli-controlled Aouja border crossing. The Palestinians are protesting. We’ll see how long this denouement in the desert lasts.
By Ashraf Sweilam Associated Press Writer, December 30, 2007Sphere ItEl-ARISH, Egypt – More than a thousand Palestinian pilgrims, including members of the militant Hamas group, were put in camps in the northern Sinai on Sunday until a dispute over how they will return to the Gaza Strip is resolved.
