If Lloyd believes there needs to be more diversity and localism on the radio, why not just open up more available frequency slots and give them away to whomever he feels is being ‘disenfranchised’?
The answer is simple, it’s not about diversity, it’s about silencing the opposition. Air America is proof it’s BOTH the messenger AND the message.
Be careful what you ask for… you may just wake up one day in the America YOU helped create to find YOU have no voice!

I am 63, a Vet, and a lifelong Democrate, and the very idea of a Diversity Czar is WRONG as defined in your article. Race does’nt matter any more, and there is no need to censor what we here or see in the news. We do NOT need to be told what we can think or feel by anyone. If this program proceeds, I,m a Republican.

Charlie – I suggest you take a look at notes taken at a meeting held by the FCC on 5/7/09, http://www.fcc.gov/DiversityFAC/050709/transcript050709.doc to get a better understanding of what has been in the works for some time now, but not acted on until the recent change in Administration. It is quite lengthy, so I thought it might be useful to point out the following pages for your quick review. They are pages 24,30,30,47,48,49,55, 67,68,75 & 90. I was shocked after reading the discussion among those at this meeting. I can’t believe where the FCC is looking to take the media industry ‘as though they are on a leash’, on account of its imposition of diversity provisions which is where Mark Lloyd comes into the picture. The scary part will be his attempted use of diversity as a means to change the industry’s ownership and programming vs the media’s current reliance on the free enterprise system for its revenues and programming. This will likely be another government program whose approach will eventually fail on the basis of our free enterprise system and a lack of warranted federal funds. But this one is likely to annoy a majority of Americans.

Conservative talk radio IS privately paid for while progressive and liberal radio is publicly funded ie. NPR and Pacifica. You should do some research instead of blowing hot air JayC!

In pockets of America, there already exist various forms of news media that have found a nitch to accommodate the diverse needs of the local population. I question whether a socialist or Marxist approach to providing news by a government run, taxpayer funded news media such as ‘Pravda’ will meet the needs of an intelligent people.
I find it hard to believe that our taxpayer dollars are being wasted on such schemes? Also, aren’t background checks performed anymore of people in government positions before they are hired? What is the level of their security clearance on which basis they are given access to private information? If Mr. Lloyd’s position is not considered that of a government employee, then how were his services procured? In either case, how were apparent conflict of interest issues dealt with prior to using taxpayer funds for his services?

The only thing to fear is fear itself. You folks are talking yourselves into a frenzy. Why weren’t you afraid during the Bush years? Perhaps if you are of Social Security Age, you were afraid when social security & medicare was put in place. Perhaps you were afraid when civil rights were put in place? You folks are afraid of everything that is for the common good. I dont Know about public airways, but if I as a citizen am paying for what is broadcast over the airways, I think that we should have equal presentation of differences of opinions. If you want to position on one side then you pay for it privately.
