A funny thing happened when we compared Bing and Google today…

Terresa and I noticed this first thing today.

She remarked that Bing had the 9/11 memorial thing up, and I remarked that Google had its “today-is-no-different-from-any-other-day” logo up.

Here’s today’s comparison:

First up, we have Bing…

And then we have today’s Google:

Inspiring, isn’t it?

Some years ago, I wrote to them when they missed Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s as well. They responded that they couldn’t cover ALL the notable dates. However, there are some dates that are really hard to miss unless you’re trying.

NoisyRoom strongly recommends you switch to Bing as your search engine of choice…

Fox News: Google Ignores 9/11 as Other Search Engines Commemorate Solemn Anniversary

UPDATE: For what it’s worth . . .

The company where I work (a typical soulless corporate behemoth, employing in excess of 30 people) is flying their flag at half staff.

The high school near our house is also flying theirs at half staff.

For some reason, not everyone is.

I don’t know who in our company raises the flag in the morning — heck I had never even noticed we had one until today — but evidently someone at the exec level is paying attention.

It’s a small thing, but they’ve just won loyalty points with me.

UPDATE:

My son just sent this – it is a weak response from Google at best but we will note it…

9/11, Google & The Internet

Key excerpt:

As everyone knows, today is the 8th year anniversary of the terrible 9/11 attacks. Many people, companies and organizations are doing things to remember the day. A lot of people are asking why there is no logo from Google for today. The quick answer is that Google does not do Google Doodles (aka logos) for sad days like this, they typically only do these types of logos for happier occasions.

But that does not mean Google is not doing anything. They have partnered up with several organizations and companies to bring together a web site named Make History at 911history.org. The site has a storytelling sharing tool that uses the Google Maps API to display Google’s Street Views. It allows “people to place and then share their photos and videos in geographical context, collectively piecing together the history that was witnessed, one photo and video at a time,” Google said. The site is also hosted on Google’s cloud computing environment, Google App Engine.

So if it isn’t unicorns and rainbows, happy changey crap – they don’t do a doodle for it… Bleh… Here’s their Make History site:

Make History is a collective telling of the events of 9/11 through the eyes of those who experienced it, both at the attack sites, and around the world.
