Perriello stoops to new low in demonizing health care opponents as racists

DANVILLE, Va. – “I’m very disappointed to see Congressman Tom Perriello and his supporters slither to new lows by claiming that opposition to the Obama health care plan is grounded in racism,” Danville TEA Party chairman Nigel Coleman said in response to Perriello’s comments on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” talk show.

The Web site Politico reported yesterday that Periello is parroting Nancy Pelosi’s characterization of opposition to the health care plan as racist. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27417.html

“As an African-American who has expended a lot of time and energy opposing the health care plan, I’m more amused than offended by Periello’s and the Democrat leadership’s endless efforts to demonize us,” Coleman said. “We are not Nazis, we’re not Brownshirts, we’re not un-American and we’re certainly not racist. We just know that their plan to nationalize health care would not improve the lives of ordinary citizens, nor save money.”

“Playing the race card is a failed tactic, and you’d think Pelosi and Periello would see it,” Coleman added. “An awful lot of people who voted for Obama to be president are opposing the health care plan on its lack of merits.”

Coleman noted that the leftist blog site, Blue Virginia overplayed its hand yesterday when it tried to defend Periello. “Instead of elevating the discussion, they claimed that racism is “rampant” in our ranks and labeled us `wingnuts.’ Maybe it’s time for Periello to get out of the Beltway, come down to Danville and have a chat with me and my co-workers at Goodyear and see what we’re really thinking.”

Coleman said his group is planning another outdoor Tea Party at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at the courthouse in Danville. Speakers will include former Congressman Virgil Goode and State Sen. Robert Hurt.
