TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • Reid the Survivor? Don’t count out Nevada’s powerful Democrat (Mark Hemingway/National Review) – If you’ve been reading the papers lately you’ve probably concluded that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s political future doesn’t look good. The headlines speak for themselves: “Poll: Reid’s re-election numbers don’t add up”; “Harry Reid Seen Losing 2010 Reelection, Poll Shows”; “Senate Leader Harry Reid faces tough re-election” – just to name a few.
  • What’s driving Sen. Harry Reid on the public option? (Jon Ralston/Special to Politico) – I have been bemused the past few days observing the various Beltway Reidologists examine the motivations behind the Senate majority leader’s decision to send a public option to the floor.
  • Reid’s So-Called “Stimulus” Job Creation Overstated By “Thousands” (National Republican Senatorial Committee) – According to a report from the Associated Press today, recent White House data on the so-called “stimulus” bill that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) rammed through the Senate this year misled Americans with a gross overstatement of the actual jobs that would be created or saved by the controversial legislation.
  • Comprehensive List of All Tax Hikes in House ObamaCare Bill (Americans for Tax Reform) – Ryan Ellis of Americans for Tax Reform published the following list of tax hikes so far discovered in the 1,990-page House health care reform bill (HR 3962).
  • A Driver is a Driver is a Driver (Chuck Muth) – Representatives of FedEx and UPS squared off in what has been reported as their first head-to-head debate in New Mexico this week at an Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce meeting. The argument was over a bill pending Senate action which would put FedEx’s delivery drivers under the same U.S. labor law as all other delivery drivers in the United States.

MUTH’S TRUTHS

  • New Feature: Starting this week Nancy Dallas, a longtime fixture of the northern Nevada political scene, will be conducting in-depth email interviews with candidates running for office next year. The first will be published this weekend featuring former Carson City Mayor Ray Masayko, who is running for the Capital State Senate seat currently held by term-limited Sen. Mark Amodei. In the wide-ranging interview, Masayko shares his views on the state “robbing” local jurisdictions, school choice, IFC, SAGE, the Missouri Plan, reapportionment, ballot initiatives, an open meeting law for the Legislature, health care, higher education and much, much more. Stay tuned.
  • You may recall that the Spelling Gurus over at Sweet Phoebe Purebread’s communications shop at the Nevada Democrat Party misspelled “bumper” as “bumber” in a headline in this week’s edition of their e-propaganda newsletter. Well, our publik sckool grads followed up that boner yesterday with an announcement of their new anti-GOP Halloween website. Get this: The clowns misspelled the URL for their own website! They had it down as www.spookypolicians.com – and anyone trying to link to it got lost in cyber-space. You go, Phoebe!
  • For the most part, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a disaster for both California and conservatives. But every now and then he does something to make us smile. “In a memo to Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano explaining why he was vetoing a bill by the San Francisco assemblyman,” writes Allysia Finley of Political Diary, “the governor spelled out ‘f— you”’ using the first letter of each line along the left margin.” Now that’s funny.
  • Our good friend Lt. Col. Allen West “retired from the army in 2004 after a distinguished 20-years-plus career that included a number of honors, the Bronze Star among them. He has served in several combat zones, including Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was battalion commander for the Army’s 4th Infantry Division.” LTC West also served in Afghanistan and gives some informed, first-hand advice on what needs to happen there in an 8-minute CBN interview HERE. Oh, he’s also a Republican running for Congress in Florida next year.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“The Washington Post’s WhoRunsGov.com Web site reports that an internal list from Democratic Whip James Clyburn’s office shows that 47 out of 256 House Democrats are ‘no’ votes for the Pelosi plan. Another eight are leaning ‘no’ and a dozen are undecided. That leaves Ms. Pelosi almost 20 votes short of a majority, at least until her famous arm-twisting and offering of ‘incentives’ (sticks and carrots) kicks in.” – John Fund, Political Diary, 10/29/09
