TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • What Hollywood Can Teach Us About the Fort Hood Massacre (Chuck Muth) – Most Americans have this whole Fort Hood massacre all wrong. Maj. Nidal M. Hassan was not a terrorist. And he wasn’t a mass murderer. And he may not even have been a coward.
  • Angle to Commander-in-Chief: The Time to Lead is Now (NN&V staff) “You shouldn’t be in it if you’re unwilling to win it,” said Sharron Angle on Tuesday in an appeal to a vacillating administration concerning the effort in Afghanistan.
  • Big Health Insurers are Ma Bell (Mike Zahara) – In 1974, The USDOJ filed an antitrust lawsuit against then monopoly phone company, AT&T—known then as Ma Bell—to break up the ‘Bell Family’ of companies.
  • Conservative Principles Will Defeat Harry Reid (Sue Lowden) – Ronald Reagan once quipped that when you start referring to government as “we” instead of “they,” you have been in office too long. Not only is Senator Harry Reid referring to his liberal majority in Washington as “we,” he complains to reporters about the “smell” of American taxpayers when they visit our nation’s Capitol. Harry Reid has been in Washington far too long.
  • Schofield Announces Challenge to Heller (Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau) – Wearing the same military uniform he first put on in June 1944, Las Vegas Democrat and university Regent Jack Schofield announced yesterday his intention to challenge Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., for Congress in District 2.

DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS

  • At least Harry Reid is keeping his priorities straight. According to a note in yesterday’s Roll Call, “After participating in a Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday in Washington, D.C., Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was scheduled to hit the road for the remainder of the week to raise campaign cash for his 2010 re-election bid.”
  • In his CityLife column this week, Steve Sebelius writes that “For (Chuck) Muth, and for (Gov. Jim) Gibbons, taxes are all that matters.” That’s not exactly correct – at least for my part. The main reason I hammer on the tax issue so hard is that if a politician, especially a Republican, can’t get the tax issue right, odds are they’ll screw up all the others as well. So for me it’s not that taxes are the only issue; it’s that it’s a bellwether issue.
  • A new liberal website dedicated to beating up on the Las Vegas Review-Journal was launched this week and tried to drag us into the fight, printing enough demonstrably factual errors to make even Sweet Phoebe Purebread’s propaganda machine over at the Nevada Democrat Party look like a paragon of accuracy. So until they clean up their act and correct all their errors, we won’t do them the courtesy of mentioning them by name or linking to their new website.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

  • “Counting on Harry Reid’s latest ideas about creating jobs is exactly like booking a cruise you know is captained by that guy from the Titanic. . . . Would you want Dr. Kevorkian to be your child’s pediatrician? Then why would we want Harry Reid to work on job creation. Reid has killed more American jobs than he could ever create.” – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chuck Kozak
