TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • Yucca Energy Park: The Other Side of Yucca Mountain (Randi Thompson) – We can no longer depend on tourists and gaming to fund our state. If we do not find new revenue sources, many of us fear the legislature will continue to increase taxes and look at creating new taxes like Gross Receipts. The Yucca Energy Park is a start.
  • Educrat Calls Oath Keepers “Lunatic Fringe” (Chuck Muth) – Gene Paslov, former Nevada superintendent of Nevada’s failed public schools and liberal lion of Carson City, wrote a column for the Nevada Appeal this weekend which began thusly: “The Congressional Republicans are getting ugly. They refuse to do what they were elected to do – negotiate, compromise and implement legislation.”
  • The Debt We Owe (Mark Noonan) – 2009 certainly turned out to be a year to forget about. Economic collapse, mis-managed war in Afghanistan, continual corruption in government, purblind liberals pushing policies which will wreck the country. Our great State of Nevada has actually been so badly governed that we lost population. There was just so much wrong last year that its hard to decide what to dislike the most.
  • The Great Zadrowski Announces Run for JP 14 (NN&V Staff) – Clark County Chief Deputy District Attorney Bernie Zadrowski announced today that he is seeking the judgeship of Las Vegas Justice Court, Department 14.
  • Tatner to Tilt at Berkley Windmill (Joseph Tatner) – After a year of speaking out for Conservative principles around Las Vegas, including as President of the Voice of the People PAC, I am stepping forward to take on Shelley Berkley in Nevada’s Congressional District 1.

MUTHS TRUTHS

  • Jon Ralston launches his new statewide political interview show today featuring disgraced former Clark County Commissioner Dario Herrera, fresh from prison and off to a fresh start. Break a leg, Jon.
  • It’s starting to appear as though the threat by Tea Partiers in Reno to recall Republican Senate Minority Leader Bill Raggio were all sound and fury signifying nothing. Despite announcements that organizers would officially file their petition around the middle of December, not a peep has been heard since, let alone an organized signature-gathering effort. Reminds me of a lesson taught by Newt Gingrich’s senior strategist Joe Gaylord at the Campaign Management College many years ago: “The planning is easy; the execution’s hard.”
  • In a Sunday article appearing in the Las Vegas Sun, new Nevada Republican Party Chairman Chris Comfort “denies (that party) infighting will hurt the party, or that it even exists,” claiming the party “has come together and is more strategically focused than it has been in the last decade.” Which for some reason reminds me of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” fable. And the moral of the story is: A naked king is a naked king and statements to the contrary don’t change that fact.
It’s customary to start every New Year with a joke, so here goes: Nathan Taylor.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

  • “Is (Barack Obama) thinking that a Harry Reid loss next year in Nevada might not be a bad thing? The more unpopular crap he forces Reid to push, the more defeat seems assured — but he just keeps on feeding it to him, doesn’t he? Schumer is waiting in the wings to become majority leader if Reid goes down, and say what you will about Chuckles, but he’s a canny operator. Hard to believe he wouldn’t be more effective than Reid. And also hard to believe that Obama hasn’t thought of it.” – AllahPundit, Hot Air, 12/31/09
  • “Pardon me, but when has the post-1912 Republican Party even tried to repeal a major plank of the enervating socialist welfare state, whether it be the Federal Reserve, the income tax, Social Security, Medicare, or the government’s role in the youth indoctrination camps known as ‘public schools’? As far as I can tell, the motto of the modern Republican Party is ‘Hold on, there! There’s no need for us to race over the cliff toward a communist slave state at 70 miles an hour! Surely 50 miles an hour will suffice.’” – Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Vin Suprynowicz
