Republican U.S. Senate candidate Danny Tarkanian released the following response to the State of the Union speech:

DANNY TARKANIAN:

“We heard some good lines, but overall, what we heard from the President tonight is disappointing. He had a chance to listen to the voters and announce a major reversal of course in time to rescue our economy from the trillions in irresponsible bailouts, spending and borrowing. Instead we heard a spirited defense of the failed bailouts that lacked transparency, didn’t address the underlying policy issues, and triggered the rush to bailout other industries and take over our nation’s health care.

“Most disappointing is that the President is still blaming his predecessor, while the average Nevadan doesn’t have the luxury of scapegoats in their daily lives. They live in difficult times, and it’s unbecoming for the President to make excuses for not keeping his promises. We even heard more excuses for the failures of the stimulus plan. Surely those are falling on deaf ears in Nevada, where unemployment is at a record high.

“We also heard the President preparing to propose a job-killing climate tax increase as well – a tax which I’ve signed a pledge to oppose.

“And on health care, we heard the same tired – and rejected – justifications for a government takeover and dumbing down of our nation’s health care system. That tells me that Washington didn’t hear the message sent by the voters of Massachusetts.

“Tax credits are fine, except to the extent that they are trying to micromanage the free market. For example, I support a capital gains moratorium for small businesses, but I believe that any moratorium should be broad-based.

“But it is the systemic, irresponsible fiscal policies that are sinking our country into deeper debt and thereby threatening our economy, and on those issues, we heard no solutions. What we wanted to hear tonight was an end to bailouts, a specific plan to balance the budget, and finally some broad-based tax relief for Nevadans instead of phony stimulus. On these key issues,we heard neither from the President nor Senator Reid – just more lip service to the needs of Americans.

‘Surprisingly, we also heard nothing specific about upgrading our national security and securing our borders. These issues are at the forefront of our minds in the wake of recent terrorist attempts and the upcoming 9-11 trials.

“Senator Reid shares much of this blame. Here at home, Nevadans are feeling the pain, but Senator Reid ignores them and just follows the party line. Instead of representing the people of Nevada, Harry Reid is more focused on his role as the chief architect of Washington’s disastrous financial policies.

“Remember, Senator Reid sold out Nevada taxpayers for the infamous ‘Cornhusker Kickback.’ That deal just proves that Senator Reid couldn’t tell you what state he represents if you spotted him the first two letters and the final ‘A.'”
