Today America is engaged in a war which will determine the nation that we will be in the future. It is a war that must be won if our children and grandchildren are going to continue to enjoy the freedom and liberty of the America that we grew up in. Yet it is also a war that can very easily be lost if the forces of good do not take to the field of battle in greater numbers than the forces of evil. The stakes have never been higher, the battle has never been fiercer and the outcome has never been more crucial. The war is not the “war in Iraq” or the “war against terror.” It is a war for the very heart and soul of our nation.

There are two forces vying for control of the hearts and minds of the people of America. The battle is not new for it has been fought the world over from time immemorial. There is a call going out in our nation for a “new morality” which is neither new nor moral. It wears the cloak of tolerance which is designed to disguise the true purpose which is to accommodate every form of immorality and ungodliness ever conceived in the hearts of man. The “celebration of our diversity” is an underhanded attempt to undermine our unity. We are being told that to oppose these evil trends is a failure to recognize that tolerance and diversity are the strengths of America. Yet history has proven over and over that tolerance has it’s limits and that true strength comes from unity, not diversity. There can be no compromise or accommodation between good and evil. They cannot live side by side; one will prevail and in prevailing, destroy the other.

This nation enjoyed an inspired birth and for well over two hundred years has enjoyed the blessing and protection of Jehovah, the one and only God. Our forefathers understood this and made a firm recognition of God and the authority of the Bible a part of our founding documents. Those warriors on the side of evil disdain the thought of a moral code having been set forth in the irrefutable word of God and claim that the founders were not Christians, but were “deist,” recognizing a higher power but unable and unwilling to give that power a specific identity. They are provably wrong in their attitude, their understanding and their desired results. The founders’ own words remove any doubt as to their understanding of both the God of heaven and the strength of a nation built on his design as outlined in the Bible.

There is an underlying ulterior motive to the claims of those who bestow the label of deist on our founders. If they were to accept the fact that these men were Christians, as indeed they were, they would also have to accept the fact that the Bible is the revealed, incarnate and infallible word of God. They would, therefore, be forced to constrain their conduct to conform to the moral codes set forth in the Holy Scriptures. This they are unwilling to do; so by claiming that the founders were deist and not Christians they are able to set their own standards of conduct because there has never been a code of conduct set forth by the imagined deist. It is not difficult to put the lie to their argument.

The early pilgrims who came to these shores seeking freedom to practice their religion separate and apart from that espoused by the Church of England, brought with them the Bible as the document which would govern their lives, and envisioned a nation built upon Christian principals. The pilgrim leader and Governor, John Winthrop, delivered a sermon while aboard the Arbella in route to “New England in the North America,” in 1630. As part of his sermon, with regard to the land to which they were headed, Winthrop said:

“The Lord shall be our God, and delight to dwell among us, as His own people, and will command a blessing upon us in all our ways. So that we shall see much more of His wisdom, power, goodness and truth, than formerly we have been acquainted with. We shall find that the God of Israel is among us, when ten of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies; when He shall make us a praise and glory that men shall say of succeeding plantations, ‘the Lord make it like that of New England.’ For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us.”

While Winthrop stated it beautifully, the concept is actually taken from a passage in the Bible.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set upon a hill cannot be hidden…. Let your light so shine among men that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 [Emphases Added]

The signers of the Declaration of Independence attested to the fact that the purpose of government was to protect those unalienable rights granted by the God of the universe, Jehovah God. To claim that they recognized any other is a demonstrable lie. All but two of the fifty-seven signers of the Declaration of Independence were professed and practicing Christians. Who do you think they were referring to when they signed their name to a document stating that:

“We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights Governments are established among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

Recognizing the importance of freedom of religion to be practiced publicly, the same founding fathers in 1887 drafted the Constitution of the Unites States of America. In the first Amendment thereto they stated that:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…

In his farewell address to the nation George Washington, a practicing Christian said:

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these finest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation deserts the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice? And let us with caution indulge in the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on the minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in the exclusion of religious principle.”

Christianity can and has endured and prospered under every form of government known to man. It survived the onslaught of imperial Rome in the first century, to abusive middle age kings and to immoral dictators of the past several hundred years. The ability of Christianity to survive and prosper under any form of government is and never has been the question. The question is, “Can a nation continue to prosper without the protection of Jehovah God?” The founders of this nation wisely decided to make it a republic, rather than a democracy. It is and has been from the beginning a nation governed by representatives chosen by the people. “We The People” hold the ultimate power in the United States of America. Those who occupy the highest positions of power in this nation do so at the pleasure of the people. Our constitution is not designed to empower the rulers of the land, but to protect the people of the land from the rulers. It guarantees rights and freedoms, not to government, but to “We the People.”

Our founders were truly a unique group of men. Never before in history has such a group of men come together at a particular time and a particular place; men who would change the course of human history. They have been aptly described as “enlightened geniuses touched by divine intervention.” They gave us a nation where every person, through the ballot box, had the right to choose the kind of men and women who would hold the positions of power. Christians are not excluded from the process, but the fact is that far too many, Christians have either excluded themselves or failed to vote in accordance with the beliefs they proclaim to hold. The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for the good people to remain silent. Evil prevails more and more in our nation because for too long Christians have remained silent. The forces of evil have an agenda which they have actively pursued for the last thirty to forty years while Christians have remained silent. As a result we have retreated from the public square and from the marketplace of ideas. This can and must change.

The upcoming election will be the most decisive and critical in our history. It is essential that this election be won by the forces of righteousness. The men and women elected in November will establish a judiciary that will determine the future of America for the next 20 years. They will appoint and confirm three or four Supreme Court justices besides numerous federal and appeals judges. If the judges appointed do not respect God or his Word, they will not respect the national morals that have guided us for the past two hundred and twenty-eight years. It is nothing less than the lives of our children and grandchildren that are at stake. We as voters will make the decisions, but they will be the ones who will have to live with our decisions for generations to come.

It is impossible to turn a person or a nation 180 degrees at one time. But it is entirely possible to turn both a person and a nation one degree at a time 180 times. Notice how both the people of America and the nation have been turned one degree at a time since 1960.

During the ensuing decade, we were introduced to the “sexual revolution” and the “new morality,” which was neither new nor moral. The “pill” liberated women from the fear of pregnancy, which had until then been the main reason for sexual abstinence prior to marriage. We were also introduced to terms such as “situational ethics.” The idea was put forth that there were no absolutes by which human conduct could be judged, but right or wrong must be determined in light of the situation. Subtle changes with profound implications and the good people remained silent.

In the seventies, a liberal Supreme Court ruled that under the “privacy clause” of the Constitution a woman had the “right to choose.” The fact is that there is no “privacy clause” in the constitution and the right she was given under this ruling was the right to kill her own unborn children. For the first time in our history, murder had been legalized in the United States. Over forty-three million babies have since been slaughtered and the good people have remained silent.

Also in the sixties and the seventies, we began to see the breakdown of the family. No longer was a family to be comprised of “mom, pop and the kids,” but we were instead told that the nuclear family was outdated. Modern society demanded that terms such as broken family, mixed family and dysfunctional family be dropped as being “politically incorrect.” The idea of unwed motherhood became socially acceptable. Fathers were allowed to sire children, then desert them and their mother with impunity. Shotgun weddings became a thing of the past. The new morality was becoming embedded in our society and the good people remained silent.

The eighties brought about a proliferation of pornography and Hollywood, along with HBO and Cinimax TV, brought a level of filth into our homes as never seen before. Sex education became standard curriculum in the schools while references to God and Christianity became taboo. Homosexuals began “coming out” and gay pride parades became a norm in the big cities. Businesses were forbidden by law from choosing their employees based on moral standards and were forced to ignore morality and lifestyle considerations in the hiring process.

The ninety’s saw the election of the most immoral man ever to occupy the White House. Bill Clinton proclaimed himself the first “black president,” while in reality he was the first “homosexual president,” in-as-much as he did more to protect and promote the homosexual agenda than any president in history. He, with the help of Hillary, brought a level of public immorality to the Oval Office unmatched by any of his predecessors. Aside from his affair with an intern, he snubbed his nose at the judicial system, lied under oath and was protected by a Senate without any more morals than the President himself. Under his example the level of morality in this nation reached an all time low.

When this nation was attacked on 9/11, people flooded into the churches and our hypocritical congress stood on the steps of the capital singing “God Bless America.” By what wild stretch of the imagination did they believe that they had any right to petition God for anything? These were the same legislators who had advocated abortion, gay rights, exclusion of God from the public square and the redefinition of the family. In their pursuit of personal power they were, and remain, supportive of everything that is ungodly, immoral and profane.

May God bless our nation and give us the courage to stand against the forces of evil in high places.
