There was a solar company called SolFocus here in Mesa, AZ that sounds a lot like Solyndra on a smaller scale (Fearless Leader never came to our place). They shut down in Oct. of 2011 and laid us all off. I was with them for 2 1/2 years and initially, I believed the hype they gave out about their wonderful panels that were going to put everybody else out of business. The money was flowing really freely; lots of overtime and they expanded into a bigger building with all new state-of-the-art equipment. I began to have doubts when we started having a lot of visitors/trainees from a sister factory in China. We were told we needn’t worry because the world was going to want so many of these panels that our place would be handling Western Hemisphere demand while the Chinese would take care of the other half…right. Then the money started dwindling and hours were cut. I had already begun to notice that most of the equipment was really poorly made and set up (I was operating/maintaining automated plating and painting systems); flashy on the outside but looking really cobbled-up when you started working on the innards. When the inevitable shut down was looming, we were all comparing notes on how downright negligent and larcenous this outfit was being operated. Well, we at least were well employed (promised stock options, training, etc., etc.) for awhile, but I now wonder at whose expense. I came across a Forbes’ article online that mentioned this company being involved with some investment firm that was also taking money from private people while they were receiving government money too. When we were shutting down, it was mentioned that the equipment was being purchased by a company in Philadelphia so that a new boiler room…I mean, solar panel company could be started there. Maybe opening and closing factories in this way is completely legal, but government throwing our money into crap like this shouldn’t be.
