Chris Christie is 100% correct on this issue. For an out of state police department to come into New Jersey, and engage in surveillance of people based on their religion is both illegal and dangerous. Just to start, New Jersey law makes it an indictable crime (see link below) for any public servant to engage in profiling based on race, religion, etc.
Beyond that, the New York Police Department’s decision to operate in New Jersey without notifying all the appropriate law enforcement authorities (not just a few people) is really irresponsible. The NYPD’s undercover spying could have interfered with a legitimate police investigation. The key recommendation of the 9-11 commission was that law enforcement agencies must communicate better with one another.
