If you thought you could trust the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to oversee the $2.8-billion organic industry, think again.
- The CFIA took over regulation of the organic sector in 2009 but failed to include testing
- Organic goods are certified for sale in Canada based only on paperwork
- The CFIA lacks any meaningful definition of organic
- This makes Canada susceptible to unscrupulous foreign importers of phony organic goods
With no tests being performed to ensure prohibited substances are not being used on goods sold in Canada as CFIA-certified-organic, the majority of sales turn out to be imports from countries like China, Mexico and Brazil.
And, as Moore and Popoff reveal, staff at the CFIA did some behind-the-scenes tests on organic foods that the CFIA had certified, and were so taken aback that they tried to suppress the results!
Popoff has a standing offer to debate anyone, anywhere, anytime on this topic. A lot of people are being duped, and honest Canadian farmers are among them. But so far, no one from the Canadian organic sector has taken Popoff up on the offer.
