View of Toronto – city where Canadian police act as sharia enforcers

Blog Wrath (1) reported yesterday that a protest against a book that recommended wife beating resulted in the arrest of a protestor for ‘mocking Islam.’ This demonstrates increased sharia compliance in Canada.

On 19 March, we wrote about the comments of former Obama advisor Prof. Lawrence Krauss who according to a Mail Online article (2) suggested that people in Britain were too afraid of offending ‘vocal and aggressive’ Muslims. It seems that the same criticism also applies to Canada. The situation in Canada and the UK suggests that people are persecuted by agents of the state when they cause such offense. Laws need to be put in place that protect free speech which is being endangered by sharia compliance.

Christianity has been mocked for years in Canada without people being arrested at peaceful protests for such mockery. Also as the article points out, hate Israel protests also take place in Canada without people being arrested.

Mocking Islam of course is illegal under sharia law. Enforcement of sharia is the only credible conclusion that can be drawn from the arrest. It is quite clear from this and other events that sharia critics are regarded as second class citizens by Western governments. Singling out sharia critics for demonization and arrest is discrimination and an infringement of their basic human rights. It also is something that prevents citizens from offering their opinions about the policies of their governments and thus undermines the very basis of democratic society.

We have seen how accusations of blasphemy by Islamic authorities results in the persecution of religious minorities in Pakistan during the recent Joseph Colony Pogrom (3). The arrest of people in Canada for issues regarded by Islam as blasphemy is also a similar form of persecution. It seems clear that the Canadian authorities see places like Pakistan as their model!

In its Mission Statement (4) (5), ICLA calls for an international human right to oppose sharia to be incorporated into international law. The events in Canada demonstrate once again why such a law is necessary. State persecution of anti-sharia activists must end!
