Census 2020

Senators Ted Cruz of Texas, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma can be credited with getting the Commerce Department to reinstate a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. Senator Ted Cruz’s democrat opponent Beto O’Rourke blasted Cruz on Twitter for the move, claiming that Texas will “lose millions in resources” if illegal aliens are not counted as Americans.

The question about citizenship on the census has – revealingly – outraged the other partisan Democrats as well, who prove repeatedly that they do not distinguish between legal immigrants and illegal aliens. Importantly, this correction works to undo the politicization of the census under Obama.

In 2009, the Washington Times revealed that Obama was employing pro-amnesty census “partners:”

Seven Census Bureau partners are part of an umbrella group called the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, an organization that loudly advocates amnesty for millions of illegals.

Leading the way is the National Council of La Raza, whose leaders serve as representatives on the NHLA board and on several committees. La Raza, which means “the race,” was founded on the idea that much of the American Southwest was “stolen” from Mexico and should be returned.

La Raza serves on the NHLA civil rights committee, which advocates legislation making it easier for illegals to vote. Census partners National Institute for Latino Policy and the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute also serve the committee that opposes voter identification and proof-of-citizenship laws.

Although the stated main argument against the census question appears to be that it will discourage illegal aliens from filling out the census, but Ben Weingarten points out in a must-read article at The Federalist that the citizenship question was asked on President Obama’s American Community Survey (ACS), and “response rates to the ACS have routinely been 95 percent or higher.”

Former Attorney General and prospective 2020 presidential candidate Eric Holder has claimed that he would “sue” over the question, claiming that the question will “intimidate people.”

In a statement, Senator Ted Cruz said in part:

“I applaud Secretary Ross [of the U.S. Department of Commerce] for honoring this request by my colleagues and me,” Sen. Cruz said. “It is imperative that the data gathered in the census is reliable, given the wide ranging impacts it will have on U.S. policy. A question on citizenship is a reasonable, commonsense addition to the census.”

The move reveals a stark contrast between Senator Ted Cruz and his Democrat opponent for 2018, Beto O’Rourke.

As Matt Vadum points out in FrontPageMag,

“That any sane person would be outraged at this commonsense proposal is a depressing reminder of the power of the leftist, multiculturalist indoctrination that has robbed generations of Americans of the ability to think for themselves. The Left has been trying to blur the lines between citizens and non-citizens for years and it’s clear their hard work has paid off.”

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) released a ridiculous statement accusing President Trump of seeking to “implement its white supremacist agenda” by changing the 2020 census to include the question on citizenship.

“This is yet another political move by the Trump administration to implement its white supremacist agenda and to drag our nation back to the false ‘white paradise’ of the 1950s.”

Yeah, that’s it. CAIR has about as much credibility as the ridiculous Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Democrats are up in arms over this question for much more than federal funding for their respective states, which is in large part unconstitutional anyway. The real worry is articulated here: “Undercounted [illegal] immigrant communities could cause states with high [illegal] immigrant populations to lose seats and funding, potentially shifting political power toward more rural, historically conservative areas.”
