In what can only be called an evil act, Senate Democrats blocked Republican Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse’s the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. The legislation would protect babies born alive after a botched abortion.

Only three Democrats voted for it: Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey voted alongside Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, also from the Keystone State, who had co-sponsored the bill with Sasse. Democratic Alabama Sen. Doug Jones also voted with Republicans Monday.

“I want to ask each and every one of my colleagues whether we’re okay with infanticide,” said Sen. Sasse of the legislation. “This language is blunt. I recognize that and it’s too blunt for many people in this body. But frankly, that is what we’re talking about here today. Infanticide is what the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act is actually about.”

“Are we a country that protects babies that are alive, born outside the womb after having survived a botched abortion?” he continued. “That is what this is about. Are we a country that says it’s okay to actively allow that baby to die — which is the current position of federal law? That’s the question before us, plain and simple.”

Sasse added, “Deep down, each of us knows that every member of our human family ought to be protected, and deserves to be cherished and loved. The love we see every day in the eyes of moms and dads for their newborn babies is an inescapable reminder of that fundamental truth. Love is stronger than power.”

President Trump blasted Democrats for blocking the bill:

“All but three Democrats voted against a procedural motion on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, denying it the necessary 60 votes to proceed,” The Mercury News reported. “The final vote count was 53 in favor and 44 opposed.”

“Senate Democrats just voted against legislation to prevent the killing of newborn infant children,” Trump tweeted. “The Democrat position on abortion is now so extreme that they don’t mind executing babies AFTER birth.”

“This will be remembered as one of the most shocking votes in the history of Congress,” Trump continued. “If there is one thing we should all agree on, it’s protecting the lives of innocent babies.”

President Trump could not possibly be more right here. The Democratic Party has gone very, very dark.

The bill amends the criminal code to “prohibit a healthcare practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion.”

“If an abortion results in the live birth of an infant, the infant is a legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States, and entitled to all the protections of such laws,” reads the legislation, adding: “Any infant born alive after an abortion or within a hospital, clinic, or other facility has the same claim to the protection of the law that would arise for any newborn, or for any person who comes to a hospital, clinic, or other facility for screening and treatment or otherwise becomes a patient within its care.”

The Mercury News also added: “Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has sought to put Democrats – and 2020 candidates in particular – on the record on the issue after recent comments made by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam of Democrats. McConnell also plans to hold a vote in the coming weeks on the Green New Deal climate-change legislation as he has cast the Democrats as extreme.”

Here are relevant excerpts from Sasse’s bill:

To amend title 18, United States Code, to prohibit a health care practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion. […]

To amend title 18, United States Code, to prohibit a health care practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion. […]

(2) Any infant born alive after an abortion or within a hospital, clinic, or other facility has the same claim to the protection of the law that would arise for any newborn, or for any person who comes to a hospital, clinic, or other facility for screening and treatment or otherwise becomes a patient within its care. […]

“(1) DEGREE OF CARE REQUIRED; IMMEDIATE ADMISSION TO A HOSPITAL.—Any health care practitioner present at the time the child is born alive shall—

“(A) exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age; and

“(B) following the exercise of skill, care, and diligence required under subparagraph (A), ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital.

“(2) MANDATORY REPORTING OF VIOLATIONS.—A health care practitioner or any employee of a hospital, a physician’s office, or an abortion clinic who has knowledge of a failure to comply with the requirements of paragraph (1) shall immediately report the failure to an appropriate State or Federal law enforcement agency, or to both.

“(b) Penalties.—

“(1) IN GENERAL.—Whoever violates subsection (a) shall be fined under this title, imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both.

“(2) INTENTIONAL KILLING OF CHILD BORN ALIVE.—Whoever intentionally performs or attempts to perform an overt act that kills a child born alive described under subsection (a), shall be punished as under section 1111 of this title for intentionally killing or attempting to kill a human being.

“(c) Bar To Prosecution.—The mother of a child born alive described under subsection (a) may not be prosecuted for a violation of this section, an attempt to violate this section, a conspiracy to violate this section, or an offense under section 3 or 4 of this title based on such a violation.

“(d) Civil Remedies.—

“(1) CIVIL ACTION BY A WOMAN ON WHOM AN ABORTION IS PERFORMED.—If a child is born alive and there is a violation of subsection (a), the woman upon whom the abortion was performed or attempted may, in a civil action against any person who committed the violation, obtain appropriate relief.

“(2) APPROPRIATE RELIEF.—Appropriate relief in a civil action under this subsection includes—

“(A) objectively verifiable money damage for all injuries, psychological and physical, occasioned by the violation of subsection (a);

“(B) statutory damages equal to 3 times the cost of the abortion or attempted abortion; and

“(C) punitive damages.

“(3) ATTORNEY’S FEE FOR PLAINTIFF.—The court shall award a reasonable attorney’s fee to a prevailing plaintiff in a civil action under this subsection.

“(4) ATTORNEY’S FEE FOR DEFENDANT.—If a defendant in a civil action under this subsection prevails and the court finds that the plaintiff’s suit was frivolous, the court shall award a reasonable attorney’s fee in favor of the defendant against the plaintiff.

March for Life President Jeanne Mancini released a blunt statement to Fox News that nails it: “Senator Sasse’s common sense bill would merely require doctors assist a newborn struggling to survive after a failed attempt on her life. Anyone who lacks the basic level of human compassion needed to vote in favor of this should quickly find another job. We look forward to a vote in the House of Representatives so that Chamber can get on record as well.”

Democrats basically voted that if a child of a botched abortion is born alive, it should be left to die, uncared for. Democrats voted in favor of the position outlined by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam in a radio interview defending legislation defending abortion. It is sheer infanticide… it is the murder of the most innocent among us.

“The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable,” Northam said. “The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”

From The Washington Free Beacon:

Sasse took to the Senate floor emphasizing that the bill would not apply to Roe v. Wade just prior to the vote. He said Democratic rhetoric about the Born-Alive act had “nothing to do what’s in this bill.”

“As you get ready to cast this vote, picture a baby that’s already been born, that is outside the womb, gasping for air. That’s the only thing that today’s vote is actually about,” he said. “We’re talking about babies who’ve already been born, nothing in this bill touches abortion access.”

Democrat Mazzie Hirono (D., Hawaii) called the bill a “solution in search of a problem” and a “threat to women’s reproductive health.” She said physicians and mothers should be left to decide whether a live infant should receive care or be allowed to die the table, rather than the law.

“Conservative politicians should not be telling doctors how they should care for their patients. instead women, in consultation with their families and doctors, are in the best position to determine their best course of care,” she said.

Every Republican in the chamber voted to approve the act, along with red state Democrats Bob Casey (D., Penn.), Doug Jones (D., Ala.), and Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.). The Trump administration endorsed the bill ahead of the vote, saying that it was necessary to “prevent infanticide” and “ensure that the life of one baby is not treated as being more or less valuable than another.”

“The bill draws a sorely needed bright line of protection around abortion survivors by requiring that they be given the same level of care as any other premature infant,” the administration said. “A baby that survives an abortion, and is born alive into this world should be treated just like any other baby.”

According to National Review’s Alexandra DeSanctis: “All six of the Democratic senators currently running for the 2020 presidential nomination voted against the bill: Cory Booker (N.J.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Kamala Harris (Calif.), Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), along with Independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont.”

Per The Daily Wire, “After the bill failed, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who was an original sponsor of the bill, blasted Democrats, saying it was “unconscionable” that “protecting innocent, newborn abortion survivors is now a partisan issue. Every infant that is born alive despite a botched abortion deserves the same proper medical care and treatment that doctors are required to give to other newborns.” He added that the vote “made it crystal clear” that Democrats “support the legalization of infanticide” and “openly embraced the growing extremism” in the Democratic Party.”

Monsters walk among us who sacrifice innocent babies on dark altars, dripping with blood and we let them in. God help us. Remember this when you go to vote. Never forget it.
