Ronald Reagan & The Tea Party Movement

Human Events features an article today by Tea Party Express Chief Strategist, Sal Russo, that draws parallels between the Tea Party movement of today, and the historic conservative ascendancy that was led by Ronald Reagan.

Russo has a special insight on this topic – as he was an aide to Reagan all the way back to the early days when Reagan was Governor of California, and Russo remained active in the Reagan Revolution through the years leading up to Reagan’s election as president.

“A 2010 (U.S. Senate) primary expected to be a cakewalk for (Florida Gov. Charlie Crist) is now being cast as a struggle for the soul of the state’s Republican Party. Like the District 23 congressional race in New York, it has erupted onto the national scene, as über-conservatives try to nudge the party to the right.

“Crist, they argue, is a Democratic enabler – a Republican who endorsed the hated federal-stimulus plan and literally embraced President Barack Obama when he showed up to deliver the money. The better choice, they say, is Marco Rubio, the boyish former Florida House speaker who presents himself as a Jeb Bush Republican ready to fight the administration hammer and tong.

“Though few analysts think the West Miami Republican will ultimately knock off a sitting governor to head the state party, most are stunned they’re even having to consider the question. Recent polls show Crist leading by about 13 points, down from more than 30 points in May.”

Orlando Sentinel, 11/29/09

“The question about Mitt Romney isn’t whether he’ll run for president again, but when hasn’t he been running for president? He’s been campaigning virtually from the day he dropped out of the 2008 race. . . . Taking a page out of John McCain’s book, Mr. Romney is trumpeting the ‘Big Tent and trying to position himself as the moderate alternative. . . . When compared to other potential GOP candidates like Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee, Mr. Romney may indeed be the moderate candidate.”

Allysia Finley of Political Diary, 11/30/09

“Under (Senate Majority Leader Harry) Reid’s amendment, in the year 2019 about 16 million U.S. citizens would be uninsured and be forced to pay a penalty tax of almost $800 per year. About eight million illegal aliens would be uninsured and would owe no penalty tax.”

Keith Hennessey.com, 11/21/09

“Senate Democrats fast-track of H.R. 3590, the Senate version of the health care bill, includes an amendment authored by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) that clears the way for illegal aliens to opt out of a proposed tax on individuals who refuse to buy health insurance by 2014. . . . Under the Reid amendment, an uninsured U.S. citizen living in the United States pays the penalty tax. On the other hand, if you are illegally in the country and you are uninsured, you do not pay the penalty tax, according to an analysis by Keith Hennessey.”

Examiner.com, 11/30/09

Catholic Bishops and Illegal Aliens

As far as illegal immigrants being able to access the proposed health insurance “exchanges,” the House version of the bill gives ‘em a green light. But Dan Carter of Air America claims the Catholic Church “has declined take up the cause for undocumented workers in the Senate.”

Not true. (I’m shocked! Air America is usually so reliable. Not.)

In a November 20, 2009, letter to U.S. Senators, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops declares:

“We support the inclusion of all immigrants, regardless of status, in the insurance exchange. The Senate legislation forbids undocumented immigrants from purchasing health-care coverage in the exchange. Undocumented immigrants should not be barred from purchasing a health insurance plan with their own money.”

First, if you’re not here legally, you’re not an “immigrant.” You’re a trespasser. Like that couple who snuck into the White House dinner last week.

Secondly, if you’re undocumented you’re illegal. Let’s call a spade a spade, shall we?

Thirdly, the proposed legislation, contrary to what the bishops are claiming, doesn’t bar illegal aliens from purchasing a health insurance plan with their own money. It bars them from buying discounted, taxpayer-subsidized health exchange insurance with their own money.

Glad we could clear that up.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says that if he had to do it all over again, he’d still commute the sentence of Seattle cop-killer Maurice Clemmons. “If the same file was presented to me today,” Huckabee writes in a column for NewsMax, “I would have likely made the same decision.” Read his reasons why HERE

Herschel Smith of the Captains Journal blog continues his one-man campaign to bring to the public’s attention the asinine rules of engagement troops in the War Against Terror are required to fight under. Catch “Rules of Engagement: Letting the Enemy Go FreeHERE

Ensign’s BS: Of all the unbelievable flapdoodle Sen. John Ensign (R-Nevada) spit out in his interview with Alan Stock on KXNT radio yesterday morning, the notion that he’s helping the Republican Party by not resigning so the GOP can focus on taking out Harry Reid without the distraction of two U.S. Senate campaigns on he ballot really took the cake.

If Ensign resigns, the logical choice and odds are Gov. Jim Gibbons would appoint Rep. Dean Heller to fill the vacancy. (BTW, Heller voted against the TARP bailout; Ensign voted for it.) As an already-known statewide candidate and sitting Member of Congress, Heller would be in a strong position to hold onto the seat, especially as the de facto incumbent, without detracting from the Reid race.

The reality is that John Ensign is going to hurt Republican candidates up and down the ballot for the duration of Campaign 2010 if he doesn’t resign. And he won’t. Because this isn’t about helping the Republican Party to defeat Reid. This is about helping John Ensign stay in power. With John Ensign it’s always about John Ensign.

Why are Nevada Republican leaders and candidates continuing to defend this guy? Do they have an electoral death wish?

Born Again Tax Champ: State Sen. Mark Amodei (R-Carson City) has felt the heat and seen the light.

Amodei famously, perhaps infamously, co-sponsored a bill to raise taxes in Nevada by a staggering $1.3 billion dollars in 2003. His proposal failed; however, a different $836 million tax hike passed that year with the help of Amodei’s vote.

That tax-hiking record has been fodder for Amodie’s opponents ever since he entered the GOP U.S. Senate primary race for the right to take on Harry Reid in the general election next year. And it’s obviously caused the likeable state senator from Carson City a considerable bit of heartburn.

So despite refusing to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge for the dozen years he served as a state senator, Amodei reversed course and signed the Pledge last month as a candidate for the United States Senate, joining Sharron Angle, Danny Tarkanian, Sue Lowden and Chuck Kozack.

We say better late than never. Welcome to our club, Sen. Amodei!

With Amodei’s John Hancock, the only major candidate who has not yet signed on the bottom line promising the people of Nevada that he won’t raise their taxes if elected is John Chachas. In addition, Americans for Tax Reform advises us that Robin Titus, Bill Parson and that UFO guy have yet to sign the Pledge either.

Speaking of the Space Cowboy….

Nuttier than Grandma’s Fruitcake: Mike Wiley – a Republican joke of a candidate for U.S. Senate and a man genuinely cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs – didn’t like what Rolando Larraz of the Las Vegas Tribune wrote regarding a failure by the Las Vegas Review Journal to mention fellow GOP candidate Sharron Angle in a recent column. And he decided to take time from his busy campaign schedule to burp out a response to Mr. Larraz on our blog where the column was reprinted, including this little hissy fit….

“The worst thing about this campaign is the fake media like you and (Chuck) Muth and Mushmouth (blogger Dullard Mush), who hide in your living rooms watching TV and attacking real people who have done a brave thing to go out in the public and try to defend the interests of the American people, while you scum just collect at the bottom of the sink and then put yourself on the internet and claim your real.”

My, my…he certainly doth work himself into a lather, don’t he?

Wiley is expected to take the rest of this week off from the campaign, heading out to visit family on Ceti Alpha V. In the meantime, I need to get back to the bottom on the sink. Dullard Mush and I are playing pinochle with Mr. Clean and the Tidy Bowl man this afternoon.

Sue Lowden’s campaign released a new-and-improved campaign website with all the bells and whistles and a snappy new campaign slogan: “Real Jobs for Real People” – a slap at Harry Reid and the Democrats’ misleading claims to have created jobs for people already working and in congressional districts in Nevada that don’t even exist. Take a gander at www.SueLowden.com

Howard Dean Declares Debate Between Capitalism and Socialism to Be Over

“We are going to have both.”

Arfin Greebly:

Quote (H. dean): “Capitalism has seen its last days, socialism is where we’re headed, communitarianism.”

Hey, boys and girls! Howie has found a new way to spell communism! Woo-hoo!

Howard Dean ventures into the swamps of wishful thinking.

The only thing that has been revealed by recent events is that the only way to give socialism the upper hand is to cripple capitalism. Socialism can’t win in a fair fight, so the only way to “level” the playing field is to infiltrate capitalism, engage in deep and extensive sabotage, and invent new rules that make prosperity illegal — or at least unattractive.

The only maxim revealed in the recent “contest” between socialism’s tyranny and capitalism’s prosperity is when you can’t win in a fair fight, cheat; when the truth hurts, lie; when the rules interfere with your total control of the game, burn the rulebook and make up your own.

And then, when you’ve done your worst, and liberty *still* looks like it might win, just declare victory and hope no one notices that you’re just making it all up.

Other than that, the only way to “deliver” socialism to a free nation is brute force.

CRU Raw Temp Data Shows No Significant Warming Over Most Of The World

Friends of Mark Fuhrman

From a fellow blogger re the latest on climategate.

CRU Raw Temp Data Shows No Significant Warming Over Most Of The World

Bottom Line – Using two back-of-the-envelope tests for significance against the CRU global temperature data I have discovered:

  • 75% of the globe has not seen significant peak warming or cooling changes between the period prior to 1960 and the 2000’s which rise above a 0.5°C threshold, which is well within the CRU’s own stated measurement uncertainties o +/- 1°C or worse.
  • Assuming a peak to peak change (pre 1960 vs 2000’s) should represent a change greater than 20% of the measured temperature range (i.e., if the measured temp range is 10° then a peak-to-peak change of greater than 2° would be considered ’significant’) 87% the Earth has not seen experienced significant temperature changes between pre 1960 period and the 2000’s.

So how did I come to this conclusion? If you have the time you can find out by reading below the fold.

I have been working on this post for about a week now, testing a hypothesis I have regarding the raw temp data vs the overly processed CRU, GISS, NCDC, IPCC results (the processed data shows dramatic global warming in the last century). I have been of the opinion the raw temp data tells a different, cooler story than the processed data. My theory is alarmists’ results do not track well with the raw data, and require the merging of unproven and extremely inaccurate proxy data to open the error bars and move the trend lines to produce the desired result. We have a clear isolated example from New Zealand where cherry picked data and time windows have resulted in a ridiculous ‘data merging’ that completely obliterates the raw data…

I posted this comment to another commenter in an open thread at the S-R’s “A Matter of Opinion” blog:

I haven’t really delved into the inner workings of the climate debate. I’m not advocating one position or another. I’m just watching how the new/alternative/social media has facilitated an open debate on this topic that was not possible in the past. The MSM has not facilitated this debate and largely has concluded this is a settled debate e.g., our resident blogmeister Gary Crooks. Many people can now communicate inexpensively and instantaneously with many other people and share their views/opinions in a free and open debate. These debates can easily go viral if they strike a social chord. This is what happened and eventually broke the Catholic Church’s longstanding secrecy of sexual abuse by priests in Boston in 2002. See Clay Shirky’s book, “Here Comes Everybody-the power of organizing without organizations.”

Experts in their own fields of research and expertise and not entrenched in the climate debate are now seeing the underlying climate data and the CRU’s source code used to smooth the data and are scratching their heads in disbelief. Read the article at the AT re the mathematics of global warming I linked to above. Our current computer processing ability may not yet have the ability to crunch the vast data in a reliable manner based using current climate models to predict much of anything.

Today’s WSJ OP/ED has an excellent piece on what happens when there is a lack of transparency in these scientific debates when critics are marginalized and shut out of the review process. As I said above, “Garbage in – garbage out. Bad science doesn’t do anyone any good.”

This is a serious flaw in our critical thinking skills at a time when are policy makers are on the verge of making huge changes in the world’s economic system. There is great danger in making these policy shifts when they are based on suspect/flawed information.

Today’s WSJ OP/ED:

The Web Discloses Inconvenient Climate Truths
The world cannot trust scientists who abuse their power.

For anyone who doubts the power of the Internet to shine light on darkness, the news of the month is how digital technology helped uncover a secretive group of scientists who suppressed data, froze others out of the debate, and flouted freedom-of-information laws. Their behavior was brought to light when more than 1,000 emails, and some 3,500 additional files were published online, many of which boasted about how they suppressed hard questions about their data. . .

This unseemly business reveals another flaw. Why are scholars who review papers allowed to remain anonymous? Reforming scientists and lawmakers might put the question more concretely: How many of the anonymous reviewers who spiked skeptical scientific papers over the years are the people who wrote these emails detailing how they abused peer review to block contrary evidence?

Science was one of the first disciplines to insist on transparency in order to foster competition in data and ideas. In the case of global warming, transparency is better late than never, as policy makers now have the chance to review the facts. Facing up to high-profile flaws is hard for any profession, but honest scientists will cheer how in our digital era eventually the truth will out, and will accept that no scientific hypothesis can be viewed as sacred or can be proved in secret.

The S-R censored my additional comment [see below]. OK my analogy with climategate/RPS et al as being a failure of critical thinking skills has been pulled from the S-R Blog. So much for transparency and faciltating an open/free debate. Yes, this was a little off topic but I believe the analogy was valid. Why was my comment killed? I will let you form your own opinion if it was relevant or not and whether it violated normal blog etiquette.

MUSLIM MAFIA – Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Conspiring to Islamize America

The Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian based Islamic terrorist organization appears to be alive and well and cloaking itself in legitimacy in our nation’s capitol under the guise of a front group say intrepid undercover agents P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry in their new book, “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That’s Conspiring to Islamize America” (World Net Daily Books 2009). Investigative journalism reaches new levels in doughtiness and concludes with a shocking crescendo in this tome, as Gaubatz, his son Chris and Paul Sperry infiltrate the shady Washington, DC based organization known as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR); the nation’s largest and purportedly mainstream Muslim-American “civil rights” advocacy agency. The frightening facts published in this book are supported by more than 12,000 pages of confidential CAIR documents and hundreds of hours of video captured in this unprecedented undercover operation.

Through painstaking and nuanced research of internal memos and documents the authors establish the fact that CAIR is the ideological cousin of the notorious Muslim Brotherhood and their leadership is inextricably tied to the promulgation of an explosively violent “jihadist” agenda. Utilizing double speak and a wide variety of cleverly devised subterfuges, CAIR manages to ostensibly present itself as a law abiding, pro-American organization, however the authors expose their unbridled mendacity in its most egregious form.

Mr. Gaubatz served for twelve years as a former agent with the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations and is a career military counterterrorism specialist as well as a US State Department trained Arabic linguist. Joining him on this six month long covert foray into the nefarious machinations of CAIR and it’s overt ties to Muslim terrorists of all stripes are his son Chris who worked undercover as a convert to Islam and Paul Sperry, a veteran investigative journalist and author of “Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives Have Penetrated Washington”.

This book could effortlessly take it’s rightful place among classic hair raising espionage thrillers if it’s tragic geo-political realities weren’t so terrifying. The authors scrupulously document CAIR’s foreign fundraising sources including exceedingly large donations from the Wahabi dominated Saudi Arabian government that gave birth to the 9/11 hijackers. Not to be outdone, CAIR also assumes the role of benefactor, as the recipients of their financial largesse include such heinous terror organizations as Hamas.

Moreover, the authors offer shocking revelations about CAIR’s infiltration of key US law enforcement agencies including local police departments, the FBI, the CIA and the State Department as well as their heavy handed influence operations against members of homeland security committess on Capitol Hill and their insertion of Islamic spies in congressional offices. According to the authors, FBI wiretaps reveal that, “During a secret Muslim Brotherhood meeting he organized last decade, CAIR founder and former chair Omar Ahmad expressed the need to strengthen “the influence with Congress.” He argued for using Muslims as an “entry point” to “pressure Congress and the decision makers in America” to change US foreign policy in the Middle East and other policies.”

CAIR’s far reaching tentacles have even permeated corporate America, say the authors, as they and their sister organization, the Islamic Society of North America blackmail Wall Street firms who do not comply with Islamic financing principles. The authors also spotlight CAIR’s use of intimidation tactics in silencing their political opponents as evidenced in their efforts to unleash a vitriolic campaign to blacklist such media personalities as Bill O’Reilly, Dr. Laura Schlesinger, Glenn Beck and Michael Savage while pressuring the National Review to acquiesce to their demands.

While elected officials from both sides of the aisle, including former president George W. Bush, have legitimized the dubious organization with governmental recognition and ceremonial gravitas, CAIR’s underlying credo remains seditious and rabidly anti-American until this very day. The authors remind us that in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, President Bush appeared alongside officials from CAIR and other outwardly benign Muslim groups that weren’t properly vetted at the Islamic Center of Washington in a display of “unity”. The unsuspecting former president announced, “It is my honor to be meeting with leaders who feel just the same way as I do. They’re outraged, they’re sad. They love America just as much as I do.” These words would come back to haunt the president as facts concerning CAIR’s zealous legal representation of Muslim Americans charged with terrorist activities came to the fore and as history would record, certain members of CAIR’s own leadership would turn out to be unindicted co-conspirators in helping to finance terrorist organizations.

As the burgeoning and pernicious scourge of global radical Islam continues to proliferate in an unfettered manner, it is clear that within our borders the threat to our cherished democratic values and principles are all too real. The release of this book of paramount importance by authors Gaubatz and Sperry hasn’t come a moment too soon. To say that the information published in these pages is a real eye opener is an understatement of monumental proportions. It is a must read for anyone, the world over, who still clings to the hope of freedom, peace and liberty that Western civilization represents.
