Hilda L. Solis – Chairperson of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee
Hilda L. Solis was appointed by the Obama Administration as Chairperson of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in Feb. 2009. The appointment was welcomed by SEIU boss Andy Stern, American Rights at Work Chairperson David Bonior and AFL-CIO president, John Sweeney along with other prominent names in the labor movement. At the time, Sweeny commented that he was “thrilled at the prospect of having Solis as [the] nation’s next Labor Secretary,” adding that the AFL-CIO was looking forward to working with Solis as she chartered new territory for the nation’s working class. Democratic Socialists of America vice-chair, Harold Meyerson, commented that the former treasurer of union-support organization, American Rights at Work was now in the key position to promote what he termed as the “most contentious issue on Obama’s agenda,” – the Employee Free Choice Act. He added, “But Solis has never been deterred by controversy.” Earlier, in August 2008, the Obama Campaign had formed its National Latino Advisory Council of which Solis was a member. A Latino herself, Solis commented that, “Senator Obama not only understands the struggles and diversity of our community but because of his personal history and background he will stand with us and be a fighter for our issues.”
Solis has a strong working relationship with socialist individuals and groups. In 2005, Solis was the keynote speaker at the Democratic Socialists of America National Conference, speaking alongside ACORN chief organizer, Wade Rathke, Peter Dreier and other leading socialists. In 2006, Dreier wrote about Los Angeles in the DSA‘s newsletter Democratic Left, “It’s a network of activists that work closely with elected officials, like Congresswoman Hilda Solis…” In June, 2008, Solis sent Elena Henry, a caseworker from her office to represent her at the Socialist International Conference. Solis also has ties to the Communist Party. In June 1996 she was represented by staffer Antonio Aguilar at a tribute event for unionists Jerry Acosta and Gil Cedillo. The event was hosted by the party’s paper, People’s Weekly World. And in 2000, Solis enjoyed backing from the party for her run for U.S. Congress. Further following her work with communists, the William C. Velásquez Institute sponsored Solis to visit Cuba in 2001, for “unspecified purposes.” She traveled in Cuba again in 2006 with a delegation of nine other congressman including Bill Delahunt, meeting with communist officials. Solis has stated that she receives inspiration from Cesar Chavez of the United Farm Workers and Dolores Huerta of both UFW and DSA. (more…)

Leading Tuscon Communist Party USA member, Carolyn Trowbridge has appealed for Party help in fighting Arizona’s new “get tough on illegal immigration” Bill (SB 1070).
The Bill which mandates law enforcement officers to check a suspects immigration status when there is good cause to do so, has drawn anger from the US left, from President Barack Obama down.
Writing in the Peoples World of April 26, Trowbridge who triples as chair of the Communist Party’s Women’s Commission, vice president of the Arizona ACLU and as a leading immigration activist, expressed her anger at the new law.
We are tired of being the laughing stock of the U.S., we are tired of being threatened, we are more than tired, WE ARE REALLY PISSED OFF. And we want the rest of you to also be pissed off. One reason our legislature and governor think they can get away with this crap is that no one else in the country is paying attention or cares.
Trowbridge went on to compare the Bill, which merely seeks to enforce already existing federal guidelines, with Apartheid and even “ethnic cleansing.”
So we can use some loud voices in support of the national economic boycott of Arizona called by Raul Grijalva. Already the American Immigration Lawyers Association has dropped plans to hold their convention here. If you know of any other organizations who are planning events here, if you know people who are planning vacations (the Grand Canyon is fabulous but stay away until it is safe to come), moving a business, buying anything from us (especially citrus and other agricultural items), tell them to stop. We are fighting against our own apartheid, our own flirtation with ethnic cleansing.
Trowbridge echoed the calls of far left Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva for economic sanctions against her own state.
Economic sanctions are appropriate. We listened when our brothers and sisters in South Africa called on the people of the world for economic sanctions because they knew that theirs was a greater goal; a little suffering and struggle would yield justice and freedom. We sustained an economic boycott here in Arizona when an earlier racist governor of the state of Arizona canceled our Martin Luther King Day; we won that struggle when the folks organizing the Super Bowl said they would never hold an event here in Arizona until there was a reversal. And we can win again.
Lastly, Trowbridge appealed to comrades across the nation to support the Arizona Party in its campaign against (SB 1070).
We need to know you have our back. We have more crazies that we deserve in Arizona at the moment. We need your support and we need an organized call from every state for real, honest, humane and just Immigration Reform.
Its going to be a long hot Arizona summer.
