More, Always More

Arlene from Israel

There is much to follow through on, but first the joy:

Wednesday night begins the week-long holiday of Sukkot, the season of our joy. It’s my favorite holiday. We build and decorate sukkot, temporary structures in which we are supposed to live, depending on the protection of Heaven.

Credit: lightofzion

And we daily do blessings (except for Shabbat), waving a lulav — (from the left in the picture) willow, palm, and myrtle, held with an etrog — citron.

A time of celebration and gratitude and faith. A time of family and fun. It is because this is a time of joy that we sing Hallel — a collection of psalms of praise.

Hey! I feel easier already, anticipating this.

Perhaps I’ll post again tomorrow (and perhaps not); there will then be a hiatus of some days, although I may post in the middle of the Sukkot week.

Here I wish all celebrating Sukkot a Chag Sameach.

~~~~~~~~~~
I have no desire to repeat the major points made yesterday with regard to Obama, Russia and Syria. But there will need to be regular follow up on-going. Here I share some additional insights and new information. This material makes the situation look worse and worse…
An editorial in the Wall Street Journal points out that (emphasis added):
“…already the Russians are disputing U.S. information about where and how much poison gas Assad holds. There are a hundred ways to cheat on this agreement, starting with the declaration.
“Meanwhile, Russia got Mr. Obama to concede that all of this will go to the United Nations for approval without any mention of enforcement. If Assad does cheat, the U.S. would have to go back to the Security Council again for another resolution to use force, which the Russians will veto.”
The WSJ points out that now Obama says his goal was to make sure this doesn’t happen again, which is not what he said previously — there was supposed to be price paid for what Assad did….”Assad will have violated what Mr. Obama repeatedly called ‘international norms’—killing at least 1,400 people including 400 children—and then get a pass for promising not to do again what he claims he didn’t do but Mr. Kerry says he did at least 14 times.”
Then this, from ABC:
“Despite Russia’s close relationship and influence with Syria, there is not yet any indication that the Assad government will sign off on the details of the agreement. It contains requirements that are above and beyond the normal criteria for countries bound by the Chemical Weapons Convention, which Syria agreed to join earlier this week under pressure from Moscow.
“Although Russia has accepted the U.S. intelligence estimate that Syria has about 1,000 metric tons of chemical weapons and precursors, the two sides have not agreed on the number of sites where they are manufactured and stored.
“U.S. officials say they believe Syria maintains roughly 45 sites associated with chemical weapons, about half of which have ‘exploitable quantities’ of chemicals. The Russian estimate is considerably lower, but U.S. officials would not say by how much. This could be an issue in determining where the inspectors are to work.
“Details about the composition of the inspection teams and their security must still be determined. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which technically is in charge of the inspections, has never mounted an operation as complex as this and will require assistance from outside parties to conduct the work. Nationalities of inspectors as well as the guards who will provide security for them must still be determined.”
~~~~~~~~~~

Jeffrey Goldberg says:

“1. So long as he [Assad] doesn’t use chemical weapons on his people, he’ll be safe from armed Western intervention. Roughly 98 percent of the people who have died in the Syrian civil war so far have not been killed with chemical weapons, so obviously Assad and his regime have figured out ways to cause mass death in conventional ways. It’s safe to assume that he’ll increase the tempo of attacks on rebels and civilians, knowing now that he can do so with impunity. Obama won’t be outlining any further ‘red lines,’ it would seem.

“2. By partnering with Russia and the West on the disarmament process, a process that is meant to last into 2014 (and most likely won’t be finished for years, even if it is carried out in good faith, which is a big ‘if’), Assad has made himself indispensable. A post-Assad regime wouldn’t necessarily be party to this agreement, and might not even go through the motions. Syria, post-Assad, might very well be more fractured and chaotic than it is now, which is to say, even less of an environment in which United Nations weapons inspectors could safely go about their work. The U.S. now needs Assad in place for the duration. He’s the guy, after all, whose lieutenants know where the chemical weapons are.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-09-15/everyone-wins-with-new-syria-agreement-except-syrians-.htm

~~~~~~~~~~
As to Assad safely stepping up attacks, this is already happening. See, for example from the Washington Post (emphasis added):
“As negotiations to avert a U.S. strike against Syria ramped up last week, so, too, did the action on the ground. Warplanes dropped bombs over far-flung Syrian towns that hadn’t seen airstrikes in weeks, government forces went on the attack in the hotly contested suburbs of Damascus, rebels launched an offensive in the south, and a historic Christian town changed hands at least four times.
“At the close of a week hailed in Moscow and Washington as a triumph of diplomacy over war, more than 1,000 people died in the fighting in Syria.”
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/during-talks-on-syrias-chemical-weapons-fighting-on-the-ground-escalated/2013/09/15/8f055736-1e3a-11e3-8459-657e0c72fec8_story.html
I’ve long understood that the world is insane, but here is your proof positive.
~~~~~~~~~~

And to make matters more obscene yet:

“At a base near Tehran, Iranian forces are training Shiite militiamen from across the Arab world to do battle in Syria—showing the widening role of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps in Syria’s bloody war.

“The busloads of Shiite militiamen from Iraq, Syria and other Arab states have been arriving at the Iranian base in recent weeks, under cover of darkness, for instruction in urban warfare and the teachings of Iran’s clerics, according to Iranian military figures and residents in the area. The fighters’ mission: Fortify the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad against Sunni rebels, the U.S. and Israel.

“The fighters ‘are told that the war in Syria is akin to [an] epic battle for Shiite Islam, and if they die they will be martyrs of the highest rank,’ says an Iranian military officer briefed on the training camp, which is 15 miles outside Tehran and called Amir Al-Momenin, or Commander of the Faithful…

“Just over a year ago, U.S. officials publicly described Mr. Assad’s fall as imminent. That would have been a major blow for Iran: Syria is Iran’s most important Arab ally and serves as a land bridge for Iranian arms and cash to Lebanese and Palestinian militias fighting Israel. Last summer, after Syrian rebels captured large sections of the important northern city of Aleppo, the senior command of the Revolutionary Guards sprang into action, according to U.S. officials and Guards members in Iran. Under its overseas commander, Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the military unit established ‘operation rooms’ to control cooperation between Tehran, Syrian forces and fighters from Hezbollah…

“Qasem Soleimani is now running Syria,” says Col. Ahmed Hamada, an officer with the rebel Free Syrian Army, based in its command near the northern city of Aleppo. “Bashar is just his mayor.”

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323864604579067382861808984.html

This is perhaps the most frightening information of all. It points very very clearly to what Netanyahu is always warning about, with regard to the connection of the situation in Syria to Iran.

And it makes the case solid for why Netanyahu wants to see the Assad regime come down, with rebels victorious. Have Obama’s concessions to Russia now given a boost to Iran? Rhetorical question. The answer is, obviously!

Just for the record, this is the same Iran with whom Obama hopes to have diplomatic dialogue.

~~~~~~~~~~
But I’m not finished yet (emphasis added):
“Syrian President Bashar Assad has two biological weapons bases, developing anthrax and other devastating biological agents, and yet the US-Russia deal aimed at stripping his regime of chemical weapons makes no provisions for his biological weapons capability, Israeli TV reported Sunday night.
“There is ‘not a word’ about biological weapons in the agreement that US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Sunday, Channel 10 news said.
Assad has two biological weapons bases, one of them subterranean and a second in a coastal location, producing anthrax and other agents, the report said.
“In an unclassified report in April, US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper assessed that Syria could be capable of producing limited biological weapons…
“The Cordesman report noted that ‘using advanced agents – such as the most lethal forms of anthrax – can have the effectiveness of small theater nuclear weapons.’
“On Friday, Sen. John Cornyn (R., Texas) wrote to President Barack Obama to warn that ‘omitting Assad’s bioweapons from any agreement would represent a gaping hole in the plan.’ Such weaponry, in the hands of Assad or his allies, wrote Cornyn, ‘represent a direct security threat’ to the US and its allies. If Hezbollah and other terror groups got hold of this materiel, he warned, “this would be a direct threat to the United States and our allies, particularly Israel.'”
http://www.timesofisrael.com/assads-biological-weapons-absent-from-us-russia-deal/
~~~~~~~~~~

Here I sit in Jerusalem, citing information (directly above) coming from an Israeli source. And I wonder how the Americans who read this will respond.

This, in particular, should be publicized broadly in the US. Obama must be held accountable. It is not as if the issue of biological weapons slipped by — reportedly he was warned. But to attempt to interject this into the “agreement” in Geneva might have upset matters, and, after all, Obama had his own rear end to consider. No?

Are Americans ready to be incensed yet? Are they enraged and disgusted by the man in the White House?

~~~~~~~~~~
There is another take on Syria I wanted to share, but I’m going to save it: This is with regard to a break-up of Syria into areas for the Alawites (40% of the country), the Sunnis (40%) and the Kurds (20%). Barry Rubin has just written about this possibility, and Jonathan Spyer has addressed it.
I do not know if there is validity to Goldberg’s thesis (above) that Assad will be protected now because only he knows where the chemical weapons are stored But a division of the country may ultimately be inevitable, if the war cannot be won by any faction.
There is much to consider with regard to the break up of various states in the region, and we will be returning to this.
~~~~~~~~~~

Now, very briefly: I had mentioned yesterday that Kerry’s focus in his meeting with Netanyahu was the Syria deal. But we shouldn’t imagine that he didn’t mention the “peace process” at all. Certainly he did — with all the usual pap about how it’s more important than ever now, and how he is getting positive messages from the Palestinian Arabs, etc. etc.

Wearisome is hardly the word for this nonsense. But this is something we will have to continue to monitor.

What is encouraging is the increased strength of the right wing of the coalition, which is sending strong messages to Netanyahu about not relinquishing land to the Arabs (Heaven forbid!):

“A group of 16 coalition MKs, many from the Likud, on Sunday pleaded with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to give up territory to the Palestinians. In a letter sent to the prime minister during his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the MKs called on Netanyahu “not to return to the Oslo Accord template or cede any more parts of the homeland to the Palestinian Authority.”

“The letter was drafted by Coalition Chairman MK Yariv Levin (Likud-Beitenu) and MK Orit Struck (Habayit Hayehudi), and was signed by deputy ministers Zeev Elkin, Tzipi Hotovely, Ofir Akunis, Eli Ben-Dahan and Avraham Wortzman.

“‘I will remain coalition chairman so long as we go down the right path of construction and settling throughout all of Israel,’ Levin said.”

http://www.israelhayom.com/site/newsletter_article.php?id=12011

What I’m actually reading is that the PA’s demands continue to increase. In their dreams!

It’s a new year. A year of growing strength and standing up for Israel’s rights.

~~~~~~~~~~
Coming full circle: When we sleep in the sukkah, indeed we are reminded of our own vulnerability and our need to depend upon Heaven. The lesson could not be more apt this year! For only Heaven can extricate us from this political morass. Incredibly, it is little Israel that sees clearly, and little Israel that other nations of the world now look to (with the Saudis practically begging us to hit Iran). Little Israel must look to Heaven.
What is remarkable is that Israelis are ranked as the 11th happiest people in the world (well ahead of Americans). In spite of everything. We’re doing something right!
Perhaps it’s faith, perhaps knowing what matters, perhaps a sense of closeness. Or hope.
Speaking of hope…
I included this for my posting before Rosh Hashana, but its upbeat message of new beginnings is very appropriate here, and so I repeat it:
Two conservative Republican women running for Congress – and both are Black.
By: Nelson Abdullah
Conscience of a Conservative
They must be having conniptions over at the NAACP and at the DNC. Who would have ever thought that a Black woman would run for Congress as a Republican. Not just any Black woman but a conservative Black woman. Not just one conservative Black woman but two! And one was a former Miss America who has a Harvard Law School education. And the other is the elected mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah. Holy smoke, what is happening to politics in this country today – the stereotypes (created by the liberal Democratic Party and the liberal news media) of the White, Racist, Republican are about to disappear forever unless the liberal mainstream news media starts working overtime. God Bless America, if this doesn’t begin to turn some heads, nothing will.
Mia Love
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ludmya “Mia” Bourdeau Love (born December 6, 1975) is an American politician. She is currently the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, and was the 2012 Republican Party nominee for the United States House of Representatives in Utah’s 4th congressional district. She ran on a fiscally conservative platform of limited government, and placed a heavy emphasis on personal responsibility during her campaign. She lost to six-term incumbent Jim Matheson by 768 votes out of 245,277 votes cast. She was also a speaker at the 2012 Republican National Convention.
Biography of Mia Love from her web site.
Mia graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in fine arts. She found faith. Then she found Jason. And then she found herself in Utah ready to give back. Mia served two terms on the city council of Saratoga Springs, one of Utah’s fastest growing cities. As City Councilwoman and eventually Mayor, Mia led the city through a period of 1700% population growth in a decade. Under her leadership, the city was able to successfully navigate the drastic transition from agricultural fields to a booming residential community. When the citizen growth necessitated fire and police services, Mia fought to make sure the city’s first ever residential tax implementation would only pay for those essential services, and she structured it in such a way that the tax decreased as a percentage of property value.
Mayor Love is best known for her conservative positions on limited government, increased citizen liberties and limited restraints on business. She believes the best thing she can do as mayor is stay out of the way of business and out of the lives of citizens. She advocates a return to the personal responsibility and reduced government dependency engendered by her father.
Erika Harold
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Erika N. L. Harold (born February 20, 1980) is an attorney, a former Miss America, and a Republican candidate for the 13th Congressional District seat in the State of Illinois.
In 2007, she graduated Harvard University’s Law School, where she won best brief in the Harvard Ames Moot Court semi-final and final rounds of competition. She has worked in Chicago, Illinois, as an associate attorney at Sidley Austin LLP and at Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella. She currently works for Meyer Capel law firm in Champaign, Illinois.
Harold is politically conservative, and was the Youth Director for the Republican primary campaign of Illinois gubernatorial candidate Patrick O’Malley. She later served as a delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention. She gave a speech to the convention on August 31, 2004 to support George W. Bush’s faith-based initiatives. She worked on the Bush campaign to reach out to minority voters.
Biography of Erika Harold from her web site.
Erika was born and raised in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and graduated from Urbana High School. Having grown up surrounded by the Orange and Blue, Erika decided to attend college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she majored in Political Science. She graduated from the U of I in 2001 as a Phi Beta Kappa inductee and a Chancellor’s Scholar.
Erika then applied to and was accepted by several law schools, including Harvard Law School. Lacking the funds, however, to pay for law school, Erika decided to compete in the Miss America Organization to attempt to earn the scholarship money necessary to pay for law school. Erika went on to be crowned Miss Illinois 2002 and Miss America 2003, earning thousands of dollars in scholarships along the way.
Forum: Black On White Crime – Sensationalism Or A Growing Trend?
The Watcher’s Council
Every week on Monday morning, the Council and our invited guests weigh in at the Watcher’s Forum with short takes on a major issue of the day. This week’s question: Black On White Crime – Sensationalism Or A Growing Trend?
The Razor: Sensationalism – but justifiable. We’ve been hearing a lot about it in the conservative media due to the reaction to the MSM racist reporting of the Zimmerman trial. The truth is that most interracial crime is black on white, not white on black so the reaction to the media slander of George Zimmerman is justified. I use the “slander” rarely, but clearly it applies in the treatment Zimmerman received by large media outlets. NBC’s editing of the 911 call was purposely and clearly done to damage Zimmerman’s character and undermine his defense. But I digress.
The Glittering Eye: I think it’s sensationalism. The FBI’s report for 2012 isn’t available yet but its reports on hate crimes for 2011, for 2010, and for 2009 suggest a long term decline in hate crimes, generally, although hate crimes against Catholics, Muslims, and homosexuals have increased very slightly (probably within the margin of error).
Historically, most crimes against whites have been perpetrated by whites and most crimes against blacks have been perpetrated by blacks.Despite some highly publicized incidents I believe that will continue to be the case.
Bookworm Room: Can it be both? That is, blacks commit crimes disproportionate to their numbers in the general population. Although they mostly prey on other blacks (which is why it’s unconscionable that the most vulnerable blacks are not allowed to carry legal self-defense weapons), they’ve always preyed on other races as well. That hasn’t changed. That they use terms of racial opprobrium when attacking whites hasn’t changed either. What’s changed is that, in the wake of the Trayvon Martin trial, we’re starting to pay attention, not just to the crimes, but to the verbal attacks that accompany those crimes.
If you remember way, way back when Doonesbury was still funny, Trudeau looked at forced integration in America’s schools (so this must have been in the very early 1970s). Those strips revolved around two utterly innocent little boys,one white and one black, who meet up and become friends when they find themselves in the same school. The strip that stands out in my mind is the one in which the white boy inadvertently starts a race riot at the school because of his response to a big black boy who is bullying him. He calls the black kid “honkey,” and all Hell breaks loose.
I don’t know why, but it seems to me that we’ve reached that level of insanity and satire today when it comes to the always dangerous black underclass and the rest of American society.
JoshuaPundit: I see this as both. While blacks overwhelmingly victimize blacks, the real story has to do with the percentage of black on white crime versus white on black crime. That ratio has remained fairly constant for the last 5 years or so, with blacks victimizing whites at a ratio of between 8 times and 6 times higher than whites victimize blacks each year. In 2007, for example, according to the FBI’s ‘single offender victimization figures’ there were 433,934 crimes against whites, eight times the 55,685 whites committed against blacks.
It’s important to realize that this has nothing inherently to do with race, but everything to do with culture. That’s the core of it, in my view. Especially telling is that the vast majority of black kids in America grow up without fathers.
Comparatively few crimes committed against whites, Jews or East Asians are prosecuted as hate crimes, no matter what racial animus was involved, for the simple reason that the majority of hate crimes are federal matters that involve violations of civil rights. And our Department of Justice since Eric Holder became Attorney General has been very reluctant to prosecute any civil rights violations if they involve whites as victims.If we are to believe J.Christian Adams and others who used to work there, this is a deliberate policy, especially in the DOJ’s civil rights division.
This perception of bias in both the DOJ and in the media, combined with the current president and the DOJ’s high profile insertion into cases that involve black, Muslim, homosexual and Hispanic victims has led to an unfortunate backlash where a number of violent crimes with black perpetrators and white victims are being reported lately that emphasize the difference in how favored groups are treated vs. whites.
Many whites whom ignored President Obama’s close association with a number of racist groups and figures were given the impression by this president and his campaign that this would be a healing, post-racial presidency. It has been anything but, and the increased buyer’s remorse at the perceived unfairness is what’s driving the attention now paid to black on white crime.
The Right Planet: John McWhorter, a black associate professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, wrote in a recent article for Time:
The numbers don’t lie: young black men do commit about 50% of the murders in the U.S. We don’t yet know whether the attack on Lane was racially motivated, nor can we know whether the three black boys who attacked a white boy on a Florida school bus recently would not have done the same to a black kid. (Critics took Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to task for not condemning the violence.) But hardly uncommon are cases such as the two black guys who doused a white 13-year-old with gasoline and lit him on fire, saying “You get what you deserve, white boy” (Kansas City, Mo.) or 20 black kids who beat up white Matthew Owens on his porch “for Trayvon” (Mobile, Ala.).
So, it’s just fake to pretend that the association of young black men with violence comes out of thin air. Young black men murder 14 times more than young white men. If the kinds of things I just mentioned were regularly done by whites, it’d be trumpeted as justification for being scared to death of them.
If one just goes by the FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) statistics, violent crime in America is proportionately highest among blacks. Numbers aren’t racist; they just “are.”
If there is sensationalism, it’s the sort of manufactured racism witnessed in the Trayvon Martin case. Both the Justice Department and the state-run press exhibited a marked zealousness in attempting to influence public opinion and the court in favor of a guilty verdict against George Zimmerman. NBC even went so far as to edit tapes in an attempt to portray George Zimmerman as racist. The FBI even investigated Zimmerman but was unable to uncover solid evidence of a “hate crime” perpetrated by a “white Hispanic” against an innocent black teen. It’s pretty disturbing when one sees our own Justice Department, in league with the press, trying to influence a verdict for political gain, even if it means agitating racial divisions.
Recently there was the senseless murder of Christopher Lane by three teens, two of them black, who decided to kill somebody “for the fun of it.” Two of the teens had tweeted their hatred for whites on numerous occasions. When Al Sharpton was asked to comment on the Chris Lane murder, Sharpton replied, “Not my problem.” Apparently Sharpton did not see any injustice done. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along now!
What I think Sharpton reveals in his response to Chris Lane’s senseless murder is how to answer Sharpton’s own charges of racism. The next time Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson start crying “RACISM!” just respond, “Not my problem.”
GrEaT sAtAn”S gIrLfRiEnD: Trick question or perhaps an even more better answer is Yes and No.
Check it – the media and auxillary talking heads, pundits and lamestream media’s never ending auxillary cadre of talking heads offering nonstop and often uncool uncalm and uncollected analysts, are actually feeding the flame. The Zimmerman thing for example is often portrayed in a racecarist way, inciting the easily excited among us to act out even more in revenge.
As best understood, crime stats are actually decreasing, yet intense media focus (or lack of it depending on the racialality of the victims and or perps) tends to make it sensational.
Well, there you have it.
Make sure to tune in every Monday for the Watcher’s Forum. And remember, every Wednesday, the Council has its weekly contest with the members nominating two posts each, one written by themselves and one written by someone from outside the group for consideration by the whole Council. Murder at DC Navy Yard
Cross-Posted at Right Wing News
Multiple reports are coming in over the wires… 2 gunmen are being hunted by Police who are searching for active shooters on the grounds of the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast D.C. One of the shooters is in fatigues.
Hundreds of police and SWAT have descended on the Naval Yard. Flights have been halted out of Reagan as well. 2 officers are among the confirmed dead. There are several who are wounded as well.
Multiple media reports said at least two attackers were involved in the rampage, and officials remain on the hunt for additional “active” shooters.
Navy officials had reported three shots were fired at 8:20 a.m. at the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Southeast Washington.
Two of the shooting victims are D.C. police officers.
The identity of the shooter is still unknown, Navy officials said.
The Navy has issued a shelter-in-place order for personnel.
The 11th Street Bridge has been shut down, and people should stay away from the area, the police spokesman said. Flights departing from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport have being been stopped, the FAA says, and incoming flights are being held at their origin.
Also, people in the neighborhood around Fort Myer could hear a “shelter in place” order being issued over the loudspeakers about the time of the shooting.
About 3,000 people work at the headquarters of the Sea Systems Command, which is responsible for engineering, building, buying and maintaining ships, submarines and combat systems for the Navy.
The Washington Navy Yard is an administrative center for the Navy, housing the headquarters for several commands including Commander, Naval Installations Command, and Naval Sea Systems Command, which is located in Building 197 and is responsible for procurement and maintenance on the Navy’s fleet of ships and submarines.
The next aggressive attack on detail is plucked from the colossal Lend-Lease program the US created to supply allies during World War II. Supplying the Soviet Union was a bitter pill for the American people to swallow. FDR whoppers–such as declaring religious freedom existed in the USSR–didn’t help. But supply “Uncle Joe” we did–and to a needlessly dangerous extreme, I conclude from the sources contained in my book.
From American Betrayal, p. 43:
War supplies didn’t just “flow” to the Soviet Union, they flooded it, with over half a million trucks and jeeps, nearly $1 billion worth (1940s dollars) of ordnance and ammunition, thousands of fighter aircraft, bombers, and tanks, 13 million pairs of winter boots, 1.7 million tons of petroleum products, a merchant fleet, 1,000 steam locomotives, 581 naval vessels including minesweepers, landing craft, submarine chasers, frigates, torpedo boats, floating dry docks, pontoon barges, river tugs, and a light cruiser. There were also icebreakers, which were essential to keep the northernmost ports of the Gulag Archipelago supplied with fresh slaves, another “lost” fact. American Lend-Lease didn’t just keep the Soviet police state humming along internally, either. As Nikita Khrushchev would say to Life magazine in 1970 of those half a million trucks and jeeps, “Just imagine how we would have advanced from Stalingrad to Berlin without them!”
Radosh, of course, doesn’t mention any of that. He writes:
West also insists that Lend-Lease aid was a crucial “rogue operation” orchestrated by Hopkins and the NKVD for the purpose of getting not only war supplies to the Russians, but “the materials that go into making an atomic bomb…up to and including uranium. (Her emphasis.)
This, of course, is supposed to sound appropriately “unhinged” if not “crackpot”–just so many more “yellow journalism conspiracy theories.”
My italics underscore the historical fact that a US government program run by a suspected Soviet agent of influence procured three-quarters of a ton of uranium (including Manhattan-Project-embargoed uranium) and other atomic materials for Stalin. Additionally, as George Racey Jordan writes in From Major Jordan’s Diaries, his memoir of Lend-Lease, “It seems fair to take into account not merely what the Russians got, but what they tried to get.”
This was a huge news story in 1950 and then it virtually vanished from our “narrative,” a matter I explore in depth in American Betrayal.
I do not, however, “insist,” as Radosh claims, that “Hopkins and the NKVD” “orchestrated” Lend-Lease. Once again, he is exaggerating a fact to deride his own exaggeration…
In this case, however, the reality is too not much different.
What is in my book is that it was Harry Hopkins, Armand Hammer, and Harry Dexter White who got Lend-Lease going in the first place–a trio of veritable Soviet assets. Rather than convey these alarming facts as laid out in American Betrayal, Radosh invokes the “NKVD,” as if to inspire snickers. You can almost hear jackboots stomping through the White House.
Then again, the NKVD did have a line of sorts into Lend Lease for real. Over security objections of both the State and War Departments and Army chief of staff Gen. George C. Marshall, Hopkins insisted on elevating Army officer Philip Faymonville, a.k.a. the “Red Colonel,” to run Lend-Lease in Moscow. There, Soviet records show, Faymonville was recruited by the NKVD in 1942.
NKVD recruit Faymonville would help run–“orchestrate?”–Lend-Lease for the duration.
As for my discussion of Lend-Lease as “rogue operation,” I frame it with a question and end it with a question.
I pose the question:
“From Hammer to Hopkins to White and back again to Hopkins: The question now becomes, How could Lend-Lease not have been a rogue operation?”
Take my arguments or leave them. But don’t distort them.
ON THE AGGRESSIVELY ATTACKED DETAIL OF URANIUM
As “19” was attacked (above) to obscure American Betrayal’s widely sourced and -detailed discourse on Harry Hopkins, the new detail under attack is “a” (as in “one”) shipment of uranium.
That would seem bad enough, of course. Why was Harry Hopkins’s Lend-Lease scouring all over creation for uranium for Stalin?
For a reality check, I’ll note that when Gen. Leslie Groves, head of the Manhattan Project, testified on this subject of uranium shipments to the USSR before Congress in 1949, he could not answer how many shipments of uranium Lend-Lease had in fact transferred to Stalin, because, he said, “we don’t know how many leaked through.”
Radosh, however, discusses only one shipment that Groves did indeed permit to go through, against his will, rather than alert the Soviets to the value we were placing on uranium during this period of frantic, top secret atomic research. Radosh repeatedly insists this was the only shipment to go through – and cites another book to supposedly prove this, completely ignoring the additional evidence contained in American Betrayal that trumps Radosh’s source.
What evidence? A Congressional investigation, quoted on p. 124 of American Betrayal:
I quote the March 3, 1950, testimony of 56
The note is: “Hearings into the Transfer of Atomic Material to the Soviet Union During World War II,” 1149.
A third documented uranium shipment to Stalin went overland in July 1944.
Just as with my “second front” debate, the FDR-Stalin cables, my discussion of ex-POWs in Stalin’s clutches, my non-“19” Hopkins dossier, Radosh has completely and missed or purposefully ignored my documented evidence − and then aggressively attacked me for it.
