10/11/13 – While speaking Friday morning at the Value Voters Summit in Washington, D.C., Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was heckled multiple times, each time rattling off a one-liner blaming the protesters on the president and pro-Obama activist group Organizing for Action (OFA). According to reports from the event, Cruz was interrupted by six different hecklers, each escorted from the room. Huffington Post reporter Jon Ward seems to suggest they were “pro-immigration reform” activists — not there to protest the shutdown — but none of the hecklers have been identified.
After each protester was spotted and removed from the room, Cruz came back with a series of quips attempting to blame their presence on either the president himself or OFA:
“It seems President Obama’s paid political operatives are out in force today.”
“In the course of this speech, we’ve heard more questions than the president has taken in the last year.”
“Is anyone left at the Organizing for America headquarters?”
“I’m actually glad the president’s whole political staff is here instead of doing mischief in the country!”
For a few of the hecklers, the crowd chanted “USA! USA!” in order to drown them out. Other reports claim some in the crowd chanted “Shut up! Shut up!” as well.
