Thanksgiving Through the Years

George Washington was first in war, first in peace, and in November 1789, the first president to proclaim a national day of thanksgiving, openly acknowledging God as the source of all “the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.”

Among the “favors” were a Declaration of Independence that inspires us to the present day, a remarkable military victory over the most powerful nation in the world, and an ingenious Constitution of checks and balances that places “we the people” at the center of our government.

For the next fourscore and seven years, most states honored a November date as a day of prayer and fasting, but there was no national celebration. Of the early presidents, only James Madison, in 1814 and 1815, issued proclamations.

Then in November 1863, with the Civil War still raging, President Abraham Lincoln officially declared the last Thursday of November to be Thanksgiving. Echoing Washington, Lincoln asked Americans to “implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the divine purposes, to the full employment of peace, harmony, tranquillity, and union.”

God heard the people’s prayers for an end to war and the preservation of the Union, but He had yet to vouchsafe a “full” employment of harmony and tranquility.

Succeeding presidents issued proclamations in the same providential spirit of Lincoln and Washington, freely thanking God for His favors and benefits. In 1904, for example, President Theodore Roosevelt said that “the time has come [again] when a special day shall be set apart in which to thank Him, who holds all nations in the hollow of His hand, for the mercies thus vouchsafed to us.” In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge said that Americans should “devoutly give thanks to the Almighty for the many and great blessings they have received, to seek His guidance that they may receive a continuance of His favor.”

However, with the election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the coming of secular progressivism, God was given an increasingly secondary role while the “civic spirit” of America was extolled. “May we on Thanksgiving Day and on every day,” said FDR in the middle of World War II, careful not to use the “G” word, “express our gratitude and zealously devote ourselves to our duties as individuals and as a nation.”

President John F. Kennedy also skirted the word “God,” calling on Americans to “renew that spirit [of Thanksgiving] by offering our thanks for uncovenanted mercies, beyond our desert or merit, and by resolving to meet the responsibilities placed upon us.” Faithful to his progressive roots, President Barack Obama declared in his 2012 Thanksgiving proclamation that “we are a people who draw our deepest strength not from might or wealth but from our bonds to each other” (but not, apparently, to a transcendent being).

As he did in so many ways, President Ronald Reagan broke sharply with the progressives, taking inspiration from Washington and Lincoln and reemphasizing the religious character of Thanksgiving. Quoting the 1863 Thanksgiving proclamation, Reagan said that “no human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God.” Reagan went on: “God has blessed America and her people, and it is appropriate we recognize this bounty.”

Thanksgiving has always been rooted in the notion, wrote commentator Daniel Horowitz, “that as a nation, our entire prosperity, security, and liberty is completely dependent upon God’s providence.” So on this Thanksgiving Day in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen, let us give thanks and thanks and ever thanks to Him who gives us life, liberty, and happiness.

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

This morning London, my granddaughter, came over to greet me as I reviewed the latest headlines in the news on the Internet. She pointed to an umbrella which is stored in the corner behind my work-station; a serious look took over her face as she reminded me not to ever open the umbrella in the house. A couple of days ago, London got in trouble playing in the house with the umbrella and she wanted me to know she understood how important it was to follow the rules.

I nodded in agreement as we reviewed how silly it would be to have an open umbrella in the house since its purpose was to keep rain from falling on us. I looked up at the ceiling and explained how blessed we were to have a roof over our heads to protect us from the rain. London looked thoughtfully at the ceiling and smiled.

It’s also nice to have a house for when it gets cold outside; again she smiled and pretended to hug herself as if being warmed by an imaginary heater. And in the summer we have air conditioning to keep us comfortable too.

London may have taken these conveniences for granted up until this moment; but as she considered the light rain falling outside, that she was enjoying the comforts provided by the house which she lived in, gratitude for all these blessings was evident by the look on her face.

May we all have a similar moment of appreciation for whatever blessings have been provided in our lives.

If you watch much television, the advertisements tend to make a mockery of Thanksgiving; a not so subtle way of redirecting our thoughts. Instead of getting down on our knees and thanking the Lord, we’re being desensitized and programmed into accepting this time of year as a spending orgy, a chance to prove we have more money than brains as we go about going into debt for items we really can’t afford.

Black Friday with its door buster sales has, for far too many folks, become more important than sitting around the dinner table with family in quiet thanks for what has been provided and prepared.

This nation was founded under the direction of wise individuals who understood our relationship with God, Creator of all we have, to include Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Our blessings come from above and we are showered with them in great abundance; consider what we have been given, not what you don’t have.

London is correct, you shouldn’t open your umbrella in the house, let God’s blessings fall all around you and be grateful, truly grateful; that’s why we celebrate Thanksgiving.

MEMORIAL DAY: America’s Godly Heritage

Today is a day for solemn reflection to honor the service and sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price to preserve freedom. Let us also reflect on America’s Godly Heritage in acquiring freedom.

The Founders of this nation knew it would not only require their blood to gain freedom, but also God’s favor. The Declaration of Independence declared the principles of freedom and their grievances’. The signers significantly affirmed their pledge to secure the Blessings of Liberty for themselves and their posterity with these words: “We therefore, the Representatives of the united states of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, … with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

Our Founders publicly recognized and acknowledged the “hand of God” in their affairs:

Benjamin Franklin in the Constitutional Convention: In the beginning of the Contest with Great Britain …we held daily prayer in this room for the Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor. …And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? Or do we imagine that we no longer need assistance? (June 28, 1787)

Thomas Jefferson: God who gave us life gave us Liberty at the same time. (1774) Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the People that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever. (1781)

James Madison: It is impossible for the man of pious reflection not to perceive in it (the Constitution) a finger of that Almighty hand which has been so frequently and signally extended to our relief in the critical stages of the revolution.” (Federalist 37 Jan. 11, 1788)

Our first Commander in Chief and President, George Washington: I am sure there never was a people, who had more reason to acknowledge a divine interposition in their affairs, than those of the United States, and I should be pained to believe, that they have forgotten that agency, which was so often manifested during our revolution, or that they failed to consider the omnipotence of that God, who is alone able to protect them. (March 11, 1792)

Let us appreciate America’s Godly Heritage. We have been given a great legacy of freedom by those who came before us and paid the ultimate price. We can only repay that debt by our willingness to promote and restore freedom for those who will come after us. As General Douglas MacArthur stated, “No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation.” (May 3, 1948)

Voting Cruz: Has God Abandoned America?

These anti-Cruz Christians dig deep, coming up with reasons so weak not to choose Cruz that they equal saying Cruz took another kid’s candy when he was seven. A highly respected theologian used Romans 1:18-32 as the text for his sermon. The verses speak of people so stubborn and in love with their sin that God turned His back on them; giving them over to reprobate minds.

Left behind at the Temple

A couple of years ago while I was working at the Houston Texas Temple in the Baptistery a large youth group came by to do vicarious ordinance work for their kindred dead. One young man, age 12, was attending the temple for his first time and was a bit embarrassed when, during his turn to do baptisms, he got water up his nose causing his sinus cavities to drain uncontrollably. This was near the end of his group’s visit and when the young man came out of the dressing room he was alarmed, almost in a panic as he looked around and found he was alone in the Baptistery.

He’d concluded that while he’d spent an inordinate amount of time in the dressing room, that perhaps his group had gone on without him, leaving him to find a way home. There was a momentary look of despair which caused me to step up to the challenge.

I explained to him that one time in the distant past another young boy about his same age had accidentally been left behind during a family trip to the temple. I mentioned that it was someone high up in the church that he’d probably heard of; waiting for him to gather his thoughts on who it might have been.

“Was it Thomas Monson”, he asked on his first guess?

“No, it was someone much higher”, I responded. You could see that my answer puzzled the young man; who would be higher than the President of the Church?

I then explained how Jesus had gone to the temple as a young man and while teaching the elders of Israel his family left him there by accident; but upon going a short distance realized his not being present so they immediately returned to find him with the learned men, expounding great truths with power and authority.

“So you’re in good company, now aren’t you?” The young man thought about what I’d said and the biggest smile came over him, his shoulders squared up and he no longer felt embarrassed for having lost control of his sinuses. An adult member of his group came from the outer foyer looking for him about that time. I wish I’d been able to take the young man down the hall to where the picture of the young Jesus teaching at the temple was hanging on the wall; but that area was restricted so it wasn’t to be.

It’s been a long, hard year for many of us. So today, my prayers and thanks are with each and every one of you. This coming year will be the fight of our lives, so rest up and get ready for battle! We will take our country back and restore it to the vision of the Founding Fathers, or we will die trying.

This Christmas I am giving thanks for our Savior and for all God has blessed us with. I’m willing to fight for it and I know many of you are too. Have a wonderful and blessed celebration with your loved ones. I hope there is much laughter and love for all of you and your families on this wonderful day. THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

The greatest joy of Christmas morning is the sound of Children’s laughter. As the morning dawns the pitter-patter of little feet can be heard going down the stairs or down the hall. With eyes sparkling and hearts thumping they rush to see what Santa left under the tree. Will their letters have been answered and the promises of Santa at the mall been kept? Their belief is so innocent, so un-conditional, and so un-demanding, yet filled with the honest expectation only a child can know. May their innocent joy and belief in something unseen be something we make of our lives as well? For those tiny smiling faces represent the true Spirit of Christmas.

So, is it really unreasonable to believe in that which we cannot see? We cannot see the wind, but does anyone doubt that it exist? We can know it does because we can see its affects. This is also true of the Spirit of Christmas. We know it exist because we can see its affects all around us. The innocent belief in Santa that lives in the hearts of young children is no different from the belief in God which lives in the heart of every Christian. May the love, joy and laughter of the young live deep in the cathedral of our hearts as well! May the gifts under the tree remind us of the greatest gift ever given to mankind! May the joy of giving make all of us mindful that our cup runs over with blessings, which must be shared with others; whether they be family, friends, or strangers?

May the time with family and loved ones remind us that there is a place waiting where association with family and loved ones, past, present, and future will not be limited by time? Yes, the expectation of life together in a land where we will never grow old is as reasonable as believing in the wind. Jesus said, “Allow little children to come to me.” Again He said “unless one becomes like one of these little children, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.” The belief in the unseen can never be expressed better than that which we see living in the hearts of our children. Like little children, there is a Spirit of Christmas which lives within each of us. There is an expectation of life without end, because we believe in “the Baby in the Manger.”

As the world awakes this morning, my prayer is that we can all become like little children whose laughter fills our hearts and our homes. And, may the Spirit of Christmas never be allowed to die.

God’s Country not Allah’s

I haven’t heard the expression, “This is God’s Country”, in quite some time as folks show gratitude for all that is around them here in the good old U.S.A., land of the free and home of the brave. “Everywhere around the world, They’re coming to America…”, hard not to picture the Jazz Singer with the crowd getting into it, pride in our nation caught in the moment. Those who respect our county, which goes without saying includes respect our laws, laws based on God’s eternal principles; fill out the proper forms as they prepare for legal entry either as temporary guests or something more that may includes citizenship.

In the movie Neil Diamond’s character drives home the idea of becoming Americans, the dream of being part of this great nation.

I love the reference to a patriotic tune written by Samuel Francis Smith in 1831, specifically the last stanza where he sums up our strength as being tied to our Creator.

Our fathers’ God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom’s holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.

If a person enters our country in any way which isn’t lawful then it must be assumed that his/her intentions are less than honorable. We have enough folks living here who’ve rejected God and the principles upon which our nation was founded. They hate our constitutional republic and individual God given rights protected by it. Perhaps this explains their willingness to import others who hate America.

What about those fleeing a war zone, migrants seeking safe haven, can’t we make room for them? Isn’t there a place in our hearts for the sanctity of life? (For those in favor of abortion; are you ready to go down that particular road?) Let’s try not to confuse helping those in need with helping those who wish to enslave or kill us simply because we aren’t followers of Islam.

I wasn’t going to mention those on welfare who are draining the treasury dry with each passing day; no, I was going to consider the subject of migrants, thousands upon thousands of folks looking for something better than what they have now. But…

An article by Brittany M. Hughes quoting Senator Jeff Sessions, (R – Ala), he explained that, 10K Syrian Refugees will cost taxpayers $6.5B; that caught my attention. We’ll be on the hook for, “…lifetime education, welfare and healthcare costs – all of which are benefits refugees are legally entitled to once they are accepted into the country.” Why so much?

Pardon a blunt question; but how the hell did our government ever get so convoluted as to guarantee permanent welfare to anyone, much less refugees, migrants and illegal aliens? No wonder our national debt has skyrocketed out of control. With money management tactics like this it’s a wonder we haven’t gone belly up… (According to some we already have gone belly up; just waiting for the toe tag)

“A recent analysis finds that admitting 10,000 refugees to the United States presents a net lifetime cost to taxpayers of $6.5 billion, meaning that under the current plan to admit 85,000 refugees this fiscal year, taxpayers will be on the hook for $55 billion.

For the cost of resettling one refugee in America, we could successfully resettle 12 refugees in the region. Creating safe-zones in Syria and the region is a vastly more effective and compassionate strategy. Such a proposal recently was put forth by former Secretary of Defense Gates and General Petraeus, among others.”

Aside from the cost in Dollars to American taxpayers, do we really want to invite these people into our country? Are they compatible with our way of life and do they plan to become Americans, be assimilated or will they become a secondary society living off our money; but planning to eventually replace our society? Why not, as Sen. Sessions alluded to, set aside some portion of the Middle East as a safe haven for folks seeking shelter?

Think about the invasion of illegal aliens from Mexico…and according to La Raza (the Race) that is exactly what is being carried out, an invasion to reclaim what these folks believe is their land, land stolen from them.

“In the spirit of a new people that is conscious not only of its proud historical heritage but also of the brutal gringo invasion of our territories, we, the Chicano inhabitants and civilizers of the northern land of Aztlan from whence came our forefathers, reclaiming the land of their birth and consecrating the determination of our people of the sun, declare that the call of our blood is our power, our responsibility, and our inevitable destiny. … Aztlan belongs to those who plant the seeds, water the fields, and gather the crops and not to the foreign Europeans. … We are a bronze people with a bronze culture. Before the world, before all of North America, before all our brothers in the bronze continent, we are a nation, we are a union of free pueblos, we are Aztlan. For La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada.”

That closing two-sentence motto is chilling to everyone who values equal rights for all. It says: “For The Race everything. Outside The Race, nothing.”

Sure doesn’t sound like these folks want any part of being members of the United States; being assimilated into our society, now does it? Apply that thought process to Muslim migrants to America.

The goal of Islam is to enslave or kill all who are not of Islam. That’s a simple fact which makes it difficult for me to open my arms wide and greet these newcomers into our society.

In a piece attributed to Nonie Darwish; Joys of Muslim Women, we’re warned very specifically:

“(In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in Canada, Australia, the U.S. And Britain To elect the heads of Government by themselves! Rest assured they will do so… You can look at how they have almost taken over several towns in the USA .. Dearborn Mich. is one and there are others….Britain has several cities now with Sharia Law controlled zones, totally controlled by Muslims)

It is too bad that so many are disillusioned with life and Christianity to accept Muslims as peaceful… Some may be but they have an army that is willing to shed blood in the name of Islam.. The peaceful support the warriors with their finances and own kind of patriotism to their religion. While Canada, Australia, the U.S.A. and Britain are getting rid of Christianity from all public sites and erasing God from the lives of children the Muslims are planning a great jihad on North America, Australia and Britain.” (emphasis added)

The leadership in Washington tells us we should not consider Islam as a threat; that we need to open our borders for migrants without a serious vetting to keep out invading Muslims, close our eyes and ignore hundreds of years of history associated with these barbarians and pretend they just want to live among us as equals. Sorry; but that doesn’t wash.

I have a hard time accepting Washington’s mandate, that … They’re coming to America, Today…like it or not… They’re coming to America, Today. This poorly thought out invitation to folks from the Middle East will not turn out well, not for us, Today… and certainly not for our children and grandchildren. This is an invasion.

So there you have it. We’ll either sing, “Our fathers’ God to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing”… or our children and grandchildren will be doomed to “Allah Akbar”, life under Sharia law and Muslim tyranny.

Exposed: America’s Enemies Within

My 87 year old black Dad called to say he wanted to congratulate me for my perseverance. “You finally have me and all your siblings (4) agreeing with you.”

My deep desire is to alert my son, daughter and other non-political hard working Americans of the moral, spiritual and cultural evil threatening to overtake our great nation. No longer are we simply engaged in a battle of ideas – Republican vs Democrat – liberal vs conservative. America’s choice of governing has become far more daunting – light vs darkness – good vs evil. “Choose ye this day, whom you will serve.”

Despite Leftist merchants of evil using big words and arrogant condescension to convince us that morality is relative, we instinctively know some things are good and some things are bad. Equally annoying is Leftists’ air of superiority – claiming to care more than us commoners about equality, saving the planet and all life; their evil intentions hidden beneath a shroud of faux compassion.

Leftists have what I call their no-pictures-please policy. They get fuming mad whenever anyone accurately describes, visualizes or shows pictures of procedures and behaviors the Left has demanded that Americans embrace. For example: Leftists want women to freely kill their babies all the way up to moments before birth. Yes, I am unequivocally saying liberals/Democrats (Leftists) are forcing their evil agenda down America’s throat. “Forcing” is exactly what the Left is doing. Americans typically vote against Leftists’ desire to make abhorrent behavior mainstream and transforming America into a welfare state. Leftists send in their activist judges to overturn the will of We the People. After verbally slapping us around calling us racist, sexist and homophobic, Leftist judges make what the people voted against into law.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, …, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” As I lay out the facts, you judge for yourself.

Well, guess where the majority of PP chop shops are located? Black neighborhoods. PP founder Margaret Sanger pulled no punches. Blacks who have not been seduced by the dark side are sounding the alarm letting blacks know they are aborting themselves into extinction. www.blackgenocide.org A billboard in a black neighborhood read, “The Most Dangerous Place for An African-American Is in the Womb.” http://bit.ly/1OOt2e9 Guess who was outraged and demanded the billboard be taken down? Al Sharpton and other assorted Leftists who claim to be advocates for blacks.

Sharpton is leading the charge in the hate inspired “Black Lives Matter” movement; founded on the lie that white cops routinely murder blacks. I guess black baby lives do not matter to Sharpton when they are killed by his Leftists homeys at PP.

Here’s another thing that causes one to scratch their head. Leftists are fanatical about protecting the rain-forest. They say it may hold a cure for AIDS. And yet, most Leftists are obsessed with killing babies. Even after a baby survives a failed abortion, Leftists demand that medical staff let the baby die. Amazingly, a law had to be passed to end this barbaric practice. http://bit.ly/1SOQp7Q Why haven’t Leftists considered the possibility that the doctor or researcher with a cure for cancer, AIDS and other diseases may have been among the 55 million babies aborted in America since 1973. http://bit.ly/1JvpltE

Leftists are defending PP black marketing baby body parts. And yet, these same Leftists are tearfully outraged over the death of a furry animal and fight to their death to protect trees and imprisoned cop killers. There is something seriously wrong in people who possess such a mindset.

Good morning Ma’am. We appreciate your patronage over the years. However, our religious conscience prevents us from baking a wedding cake for your marriage to a woman. I imagine this is pretty much how the conversation went. Well, all heck broke loose. Christian bakers Aaron and Melisa Klein had to close down their shop and state ordered to pay a lesbian couple $135,000 in absurd damages.

Check this out folks. America rallied behind the Kleins and started a donations account. When the account reached $100,000, homosexuals pressured Go-Fund-Me into shutting down the account – claiming Go-Fund-Me was supporting hate. http://bit.ly/1OON1cF

Okay, so first homosexual activists fined the Kleins $135k. Then, they attempted to block efforts to pay the fine. So, the fine is not about paying the lesbian couple, it is about destroying the Kleins. In essence, Leftists want to hang the Kleins’ economically bloody carcass in the public square as a warning to Christians who refuse to betray their faith. Can you say an assault on Christians’ constitutional “free exercise of religion”, boys and girls?

Scripture says “no weapon formed against us shall prosper” and “what they meant for evil, God meant for good.” The Kleins’ account has reached $372,000, thus far. http://nbcnews.to/1SgNk5t Praise God!

The Kleins have five kids with whom they planned to leave their business. Leftists have other plans for the Klein family.

Dad calling me about his and my siblings’ conversion was really cool. However, I am constantly thinking and praying for wisdom to awaken fellow blacks and other Americans continuously played by Leftists. I rest in the knowledge that surrendering to evil is the only way we fail.

Interviewers have asked on numerous occasions, “How do you endure the name calling and hate you receive as a black conservative Republican?” I reply, “It is easy because I know I am on the right side….God’s.”

Watch the Astonishment on Gay Pride Event Attendees’ Faces When They Learn Which ‘Bigot’ Uttered These Anti-Gay Marriage Quotes

Blaze Radio and San Diego talk show host Mike Slater attended last weekend’s Gay Pride event in his home town. And he stunned event-goers with some simple facts they couldn’t believe.

Slater took the opportunity to survey the attendees, asking them questions such as, “What percentage of the male population do you think is gay?” He received a wide variety of answers, the lowest being 28% and the highest, 70%

Using statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Slater surprised virtually every person he encountered telling them the CDC says 1.8% of males are gay.

The radio talker also played a little game with the attendees called, “Which Bigot Said It?”

On a white board, Slater had photos of Donald Trump, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee and Sarah Palin.

He also posted the following four quotes about gay marriage.

“Marriage has got historic, religious and moral content that goes back to the beginning of time.”
“I believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I am not in favor of gay marriage.”
“I think marriage is as a marriage has always been, between a man and a woman.”
“For me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God’s in the mix.”

Slater read the quotes and asked the gay pride parade supporters, “Which bigot said it?”

After they made their guesses, it was revealed the quotes came from Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
