He’s a major in the Medical Corps, convert to islam, and was going to deploy soon.

UPDATE: News Alert – The Washington Post

Fort Hood suspected gunman was not killed in incident

The gunman behind a shooting rampage at Fort Hood is alive, hospitalized in stable condition and in custody, the commanding general of Fort Hood said Thursday night in contradicting his own information from earlier Thursday. Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was the only shooter.

Irony.

Military bases are “gun free zones.”

The MPs have loaded guns, and persons on designated guard duty, but otherwise no.

Even in training during periods where the soldier must have his rifle with him at all times, it isn’t loaded except during range training.

What’s funny is that on a firearms forum a couple years back we actually had a discussion of whether a military base would be equipped and prepared to repel boarders. The conclusion was “not really.” If you can get “inside the wire” with live weapons, you can wreak all kinds of havoc.
