TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • Nevada’s Transparency Website Better, but Far from Ideal – (Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau) Eighteen months after Gov. Jim Gibbons issued an executive order requiring the state’s financial information to be posted on an easily searchable website for the public, his quest for transparency remains a work in progress.
  • Lowden’s Money Pitch – (Jon Ralston) GOP Senate contender Sue Lowden has sent out a four-page letter soliciting funds for her campaign against the 8.7-million-dollar man, Harry Reid. Lowden’s missive pushes various hot buttons to get into donors’ wallets and presage her campaign strategy.
  • Sarah-cuda v. Scozzafava – (John Fund) Sarah Palin’s decision to endorse the Conservative Party candidate in an upstate New York special election for Congress has dramatically raised the stakes in the race.
  • Scozzafava Funnels Campaign Cash to Family – (Erick Erickson) Jack Abramoff, present jailbird, was convicted of all sorts of crooked schemes. One of his favorites was to funnel money through various organizations into the hands of other people.
  • Another Shameless FedEx Misdirection Play – (Chuck Muth) Last June, FedEx launched a largely anonymous, misleading, multi-million dollar attack campaign against UPS in an effort to retain special treatment under the law which gives them a huge marketing advantage over their competitors.

MUTH’S TRUTHS

I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read this:

“A St. Joseph man named as a person of interest in an Oct. 13 home invasion at Lake Contrary is in federal custody. Nathan Taylor, 29, was turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and later Thursday to U.S. marshals on a federal charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.”

Alas, it was a different Nathan Taylor. But who among us would have been surprised if it WAS our own “Li’l Nate” Taylor? Anyone?

KIDS HAPPY HOUR & DECK PARTY

Citizen Outreach Foundation is hosting its first-ever Kids Happy Hour & Deck Party on November 10th from 5 to 7 pm at Joe’s Crab Shack in Green Valley.

Tuesday nights are Kids Night at Joe’s, so kids eat for $2! Better yet, parents have the opportunity to enjoy cheap drink specials, including $3 margaritas and $2 mixed drinks!

Joe’s is roping off a special section for us on their large deck, so you’ll be able to keep a watchful eye out while the kids play on the on-site playground while sitting back and enjoying adult conversation. We are even bringing in a clown to provide entertainment for the little ones!

Please RSVP to [email protected] with your name and the number in your family that will be attending. We need to know how much of the deck Joe’s needs for rope off for our event.

HELP WANTED

Book Reviewers – Volunteers wanted to read and review the latest conservative and/or political books. Reviews will be 300 to 500 words. Nevada public school graduates are welcome if they are able to spell and string together grammatically correct sentences.

Weekend Features Writers – Two volunteers needed to write weekend features. One assignment will involve calling and asking subjects three “fun” questions and then typing up the responses with a brief introduction. The other feature will involve doing exclusive email interviews with a leading political or government figure.

Freelance “Stringers” – Volunteers wanted to write interesting op-eds or engage in targeted “citizen journalism” around the state. If you have a gift for the written word and would like to see your name in lights here at Nevada News & Views, please contact us.

All interested parties should email publisher Chuck Muth at: [email protected]

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“I don’t doubt Richard Ziser’s sincerity, but I am tired of him telling me how to live my life. Now he wants to tell me how to die.” – Columnist Jane Ann Morrison on Ziser’s new “personhood” ballot initiative
