I am writing to give you the breaking news of Senator Reid’s latest desperate play for a government option on health care.
Our lead over Senator Reid has him scrambling for support anywhere he can find it. Polling in Nevada has shown that Senator Reid is vulnerable because even Democrats know that he is failing our state and we are hitting him hard on his hypocrisy.
At the same time, advertisements from the left are now running in Nevada questioning Senator Reid’s leadership and asking if he is strong enough to pass a public option.
So, it wasn’t surprising on Monday when Senator Reid announced that he would cater to the demands of those pushing for the government option and try to jam it through the Senate on a vote along partisan lines. This is another blatant attempt to further his push to raise $25 million to “vaporize” our campaign.
Make no mistake, this government option is bad for America whether or not it includes an opt-out. The Heritage Foundation published an excellent list of 20 questions that make this clear.
Soon after Reid’s announcement, two moderates – one Democrat and one Republican – announced their opposition. Another liberal senator, Russ Feingold, raised questions too. This was a critical sign that Senator Reid has lost the confidence of key Senate colleagues. They know he is fighting for his own political life rather than doing what’s best for America.
