TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • Jackass Pro-Life Activist Attacks Nevada Pro-Life Leaders (Chuck Muth) – Anyone who knows me knows I’m not exactly a social conservative. I am a libertarian-leaning Goldwater conservative. But that doesn’t mean I don’t respect the opinions and commitment of social conservatives here in Nevada even as we disagree occasionally on some issues.
  • Cut to the Bone, My Butt (Chuck Muth) – According to a report by Emily Richmond in the Las Vegas Sun on Tuesday, “UNLV is spending about $500,000 on raises and new positions for non-teaching administrators.”
  • McNaught Launches Bid with a Bang (Chuck Muth) – While candidates up and down the ballot are complaining about Mother Hubbard’s fundraising cupboard being bare, Republican state senate candidate Patrick McNaught kicked off his campaign for the District 12 seat with a bang last night at the M.
  • Gibbons Says He Will Hold Off On Special Session If At All Possible (Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau) – Gov. Jim Gibbons said today he continues to evaluate whether a special session of the Legislature will be needed to balance the state budget, but added he will avoid such a costly move if possible.
  • Gross Jobs (Paul Jacob) – The president says he’s creating jobs. I’m skeptical. I guess there are some things government can do to ensure that jobs get created, out there in the bill-paying, profit-making world. But these do not include spending trillions of borrowed money.

DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS

An initiative to require secret ballot elections was launched yesterday as part of an out-of-state national effort. Anti-union experts have told me the initiative is likely to eat up a lot of time, energy and resources only to be overturned by federal courts which will declare that federal labor law trumps state law. Why don’t conservatives stick to initiatives limiting government spending increases and making it harder to raise taxes through ballot initiatives?

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“In a complete reversal from his position on a similar vote just months ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) flip-flopped on Tuesday and voted to make funds available for President Obama to construct new facilities in the United States – or modify existing ones here – and bring Guantanamo detainees to American soil.” – National Republican Senatorial Committee
